Five Meet Records Broken on the First Day of Brazilian Championships

The first morning of the Brazilian National Championships and Daltely Guimaraes Trophy started with three men putting up times to qualify for the World Championships in Kazan. The evening went markedly better with six swims and fives swimmers making the qualifying times for Kazan.

In the prelims World Short Course Championships silver medalist Nicholas Santos posted a 23.01 in the men’s 50 butterfly beating the World Championships qualifying time of 23.07. In the finals it was Cesar Cielo who stole the show winning the event in a time of 22.91 breaking Santos’ meet record of 22.95, “I am most pleased to swim in the 22s again,” said Cielo.

He commented that hew was still feeling some fatigue from his efforts in Doha, “Physically I’m fine, but mentally I’m still a little tired. I’ll try to think of one race at a time.”

Santos collected the silver posting a 23.04 just off his prelims time. Henrique Martins finished third in a time of 23.44.

Cielo wasn’t finished there. As reported by SwimSwam yesterday Cielo isn’t entered in the individual 100 freestyle, but took the opportunity to qualify as part of his club’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay team. He lead the relay off in a time of 48.58 to qualify for Kazan.

In the prelims Guilherme Guido, who was part of both the winning medley relays in Doha, posted a time of 53.73 in the men’s 100 backstroke beating the World Championships qualifying time of 54.36. At night Guido took the event in a time of 54.10 followed by Thiago Pereira who touched in a time of 54.54.

After his morning swim Guido expressed his pleasure with his performances both in Doha and in the prelims. He told the press that if he is able to beat his own South American record of 53.24 before the Olympics that he will have a chance at achieving his goal of medaling in Rio.

In the men’s 50 breaststroke two swimmers qualified for Kazan one in the prelims and one in the finals. Joao Gomes Jr had a terrific swim in the morning posting a 26.89 beating the qualifying time of 27.10. In the finals he was not able to hold off World Short Course Champion Felipe Silva who won the event in a time of 27.04 and in the process qualifying for a trip to the World Championships this summer.

Gomes Jr collected the silver posting a time of 27.14.

Silva told the press that he was happy with the swim and that his performance is a good sign that his 100 breaststroke on Saturday will be strong as well.
