San Diego State Aztecs claim both Mountain West weekly awards

The following is a press release courtesy of the Mountain West Conference:

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. San Diego State senior Chelsea Bailey has been named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, while fellow Aztec Alexandra Caplan has earned MW Women’s Diver of the Week honors for competition over the 2014-15 winter holiday break. It is the first Mountain West weekly accolade for Bailey and the second for Caplan in their respective careers.

 

WOMEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

CHELSEA BAILEY, SAN DIEGO STATE

Senior, Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS

  • Competed in two meets last week, leading the Aztecs to a 5-0 dual meet record.
  • Recorded four event wins in quad-meet against Air Force, Incarnate Word and UC San Diego on December 29.
  • Won the 50-yard freestyle (23.87) and 100-yard freestyle (52.21). Swam legs of the victorious 200-yard medley relay (1:45.07) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:30.55).
  • The 200-medley relay time of 1:45.07 was the ninth-fastest in Aztec Aquaplex history.
  • Against Grand Canyon and Incarnate Word on January 3, won two events and placed second in two.
  • Won the 50-free (23.40) and placed second in the 100-free (51.80). Swam a leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:47.60) and a leg of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.66). The 400-medley relay time set a pool record at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif.

 

WOMEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK

ALEXANDRA CAPLAN, SAN DIEGO STATE

Freshman, Mission Viejo, Calif. / Mission Viejo HS

  • Posted NCAA-qualifying marks in four events over two meets as the Aztecs picked up five dual meet victories during the holiday break.
  • Against Air Force, Incarnate Word and UC San Diego on December 29, won the 3-meter springboard (329.35) and was third in the 1-meter springboard (271.45).
  • Her mark on the 3-meter board was a personal-best and ranks second all-time for an Aztec diver. The score currently ranks third in the Mountain West standings
  • On January 3 against Grand Canyon and Incarnate Word, won both the 1-meter (289.55) and the 3-meter boards (324.50). Her 1-meter score was her best as an Aztec and ranks fourth all-time at SDSU. It also currently ranks third in the MW this season.
