Defending Texas state champs Austin Westlake dominated the girls district 14-6A meet over the weekend, while the Westlake boys also took home a convincing win.
The Westlake girls keyed on their talented underclassmen, with sophomore Victoria Edwards and freshman Dakota Luther each going 4-for-4 on wins.
Edwards was all but untouchable in her races, winning both her individual events by more than two seconds. Edwards was 55.98 in leading a Westlake 1-2 of the 100 fly, and added a 55.72 in the 100 back, the field’s best time by more than 3 seconds.
The 9th-grader Luther led 1-2s for her team in both the distance freestyle races. She went 1:53.74 to win the 200 free with fellow freshman Morgan Johnson second in 1:55.77. The duo returned to sweep the 500 free as well, with Luther just getting the touchout 4:58.54 to 4:54.70.
Edwards, Catriona MacGregor, Luther and Maggie Taylor combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:47.91. Edwards was 26.50 swimming backstroke and Luther 25.93 on fly. Both were the fastest splits of the field, as was Taylor’s 24.21 anchor leg.
Luther, Edwards, Ilsa Adame and MacGregor also won the 400 free relay in 3:35.46, with Edwards splitting 53.2 and MacGregor 53.3.
Austin High School sisters Heidi and Haley Schultz also scored a win apiece, both in touchouts. Sophomore Haley Schultz topped Westlake’s Taylor in the 50 free 24.57 to 24.68, and her older sister Heidi, a junior, won the 100 breast in 1:07.92, a narrow touchout of Lake Travis’s Maggie Jukes.
The rest of the events went to Westlake, with MacGregor winning the 200 IM and Adame taking the 100 free.
On the boys side, Westlake faced a tough test at the top from Lake Travis High School, with each team winning 4 events. But Westlake’s depth and relay prowess (they won both free relays) powered them to the team win.
Mason Tenney doubled up for Lake Travis, keeping his team in the hunt. Tenney won the 200 IM (1:54.08) and 100 fly (49.39) in his senior season. Tenney, a Texas Longhorns commit, also split 22.36 on the winning 200 medley relay team.
Also winning two individuals was Austin High School sophomore Grant Reed. Reed won the first individual race by putting up a 1:43.04 in the 200 free. He then faced off with 50 free winner Mitchell Tomazin in the middle 100-yard distance. It was Reed’s endurance that came out on top, as the sophomore went 47.36 to Tomazin’s 47.64.
But Westlake won four of the final five events to take home the team trophy. That included both free relays, plus individual wins from two underclassmen.
Sophomore Will Thomas paced the 500 free in 4:38.48 before the Westlakers won the 200 free relay. Then freshman Matthew Willenbring put up a 1:01.14 to take the 100 breaststroke. A 400 free relay win later and Westlake had wrapped up its team title.

Wes Lake boys won by considerably more points over Lake Travis when compared to the West Lake girls team’s lead against Lake Travis. Glad that the focus was on the gals starring role.

Just a correction to above comment, the Schultz girls have been swimming for Lost Creek Aquatics for the past 9 months under Head Coach Steve Jones.
And that’s without REGAN BARNEY of Nitro Swimming also a Westlake student who is not swimming highschool! Westlake must have something in the water! Go Chaps. Future Super Relay?
Let it be noted that every one of the girls individual event winners (Dakota Luther, Victoria Edwards, Ilse Adame, Catriona MacGregor, Heidi Schultz, Haley Schultz) all swim for Longhorn Aquatics for their club team. Grant Reed as well.
