WOMEN’S MEET
The Minnesota women, paced by a multitude of swimmers, only gave up one swimming win as they pushed past Northwestern and Purdue en route to big victories over each team. They defeated Northwestern 259-88 and Purdue 232.5-116.5, while Purdue outlasted NU 206-134.
The Gophers were out quick, winning the first three events, starting with the 200 free relay. The team of Becca Weiland, Lauren Votava, Blake Zeiger, and Danielle Nack all split low 23’s to take the event (1:32.76) after a late charge from NU’s Annika Winsnes, who anchored the Wildcats in 22.70, but couldn’t eclipse Nack. NU touched at 1:33.03, while Purdue’s A relay was DQ’d. Blake Zeiger’s sister Brooke Zeiger won a close 400 IM race with Purdue’s Nika Petric, edging the Boilermaker 4:19.10 to 4:19.92. Capping off Minnesota’s hot start was Weiland in the 100 free, as she touched in 50.25 for the win ahead of her teammate Votava (50.40).
Lacey Locke, who was NU’s only victor yesterday (in the 100 back), was lights out in the 200 back. She dominated Brooke Zeiger, who had swam the 400 IM not to long before, and won it in 1:58.67. Zeiger touched at 2:01.77.
The Gophers roared back with a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly, following up with wins in each remaining event. Winning that 100 fly for Minnesota was Tori Simenec (55.01) followed closely by freshman Nack (55.20). Kierras Janzen and Smith touched first in the 500 free and 200 breast, respectively, keeping the energy up for the hosts Minnesota. Janzen swam to a 4:47.86 finish in the 500, followed by Kaersten Meitz (4:48.66) of Purdue. Smith then cruised in the 200 breast, touching at 2:12.68, over six seconds ahead of the next best swimmer.
The Gophers finished 1st and 3rd in the final relay to secure their big wins over two B1G opponents.
MEN’S MEET
The three teams’ A relays were all bunched up in an intense 200 free relay to kick off session two of the double dual. The Gophers ended up on top (1:21.27) followed by Purdue (1:21.70) and NU (1:21.91).
Of the remaining individual events, Purdue and Minnesota each split three wins. Taking two events was Guillermo Blanco, who looked like he was still feeling it after his two wins from yesterday. Blanco owned the 400 IM (3:53.60) over Jakub Maly (3:56.93), winning by a considerable margin after the two clashed in the 200 IM yesterday and Blanco only won by tenths. Blanco only had the 100 free to rest, and was back in the pool for the 200 back. He outlasted NU freshman Alex Snarski after flipping in 5th position at the 100 mark, touching at 1:47.41 to Snarski’s 1:47.78.
The Boilers’ other win came in the 200 breast, as it was Marat Amaltdinov who touched just under two minutes (1:59.93) over Spencer Mattox of Minnesota, who finished with a time of 2:00.64.
Paul Fair was the only swimmer to crack 45 seconds in the 100 free, as he won it in 44.99 for the Gophers. In the 100 fly, Daryl Turner put together a nice swim of 47.95 to put another win on the board for Minnesota. The Gophers flexed their muscles in the 500 free, as CJ Smith, Michael Nunan, and Logan Redondo swept the field. Smith, who took down NU’s Jordan Wilimovsky in the 1000 yesterday, easily won in 4:28.43. Nunan touched at 4:33.02 and Redondo was just behind at 4:33.45.
The Minnesota wrapped up their meet with a convincing win in the 400 free relay, breaking three minutes and solidifying their victories over NU and Purdue. They defeated NU with a score of 250-103 and Purdue in 196.5-156.5, as Purdue upended NU 206-134.
