Caeleb Dressel Breaks His Own 17-18 National Age Group Record in 50 Yard Free at SEC Prelims

Florida Gator freshman Caeleb Dressel will be 18 until the beginning of his sophomore season (he ages up on August 16th, 2015), and that means that despite being into his first NCAA Championship season, he’s eligible to break 17-18 National Age Group Records (much like we’ve seen in the past from stars like Kevin Cordes).

As such, his 18.89 in prelims on Wednesday of the 2015 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama will be a new National Age Group Record once ratified, breaking the 18.94 that he did at Winter Nationals in 2013 – the famous meet where despite severe chlorine issues, he managed to become the youngest swimmer ever under 19 seconds.

While Dressel’s third event is still in-the-air (it will be either the 200 free or the 100 fly – our guess is the 100 fly), he will also be targeting David Nolan’s 42.34 in the 100 yard free for another record-breaking swim.

The 100 fly National Age Group Record is a 44.91 done by Tom Shields in 2010 – when he was in the same situation – and the 200 free mark is 1:33.07 – once again, at the end of his freshman season of college.

Dressel’s old best times in those other three events are a 42.85 in the 100 free (.51 short), a 45.89 in the 100 fly (.98 seconds short), and a 1:34.69 in the 200 free (1.62 seconds short). All of those times were done while still in high school.

Great news.
Happy to see him break that record from December 2013.
Definitely back in business after a sabbatical last year.
Hopefully he isn’t fully rested for that meet, that would be stupid, and can swim faster at NCAA’s.

I am also a little concerned about how rested he is. It seems to me that in the SEC, teams usually show up big and ready, meaning they are a little further in their taper than other conferences. This is probably because they are earlier than other conferences.

Though what helps ease my mind is knowing that Brad DeBorde was able to stay under 19 1 month later, and Cieslak dropped time. I am sure he’ll be fine and hopefully he will be able to break up a texas sweep in the 100 butterfly.

That brings up another question. There are three (that I can think of) star 100 fly fresham: Schooling, Dressel, and Lynch. You think any of… Read more »
