The BYU Cougars outscored the Gaucho men, while the Hawaii women maintained their lead during the third night of finals at the MPSF Swimming and Diving Championships, where both men and women dropped MPSF meet records.
UCSB’s Heren Alanis took the 400 IM for the Gaucho’s in an NCAA B cut (4:17.09) ahead of San Diego senior Keena Lineback (4:19.32), who also swam under the B standard.
BYU took a commanding 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s 400 IM, with the charge led by junior Hayden Palmer in an NCAA B cut of 3:47.52. His teammates Rafa Alfaro (3:49.70) and Stephen Richards (3:50.51) touched second and third, respectively. Following up for fourth was UCSB’s Dylan Kubick just one tenth of a second behind in 3:50.64. The top five swimmers in the event all grabbed NCAA B qualifying times.
UC Davis’ Hilvy Cheung took home a win for the Aggies in the 100 Fly in an NCAA B cut of 53.65, just a few tenths ahead of second-place BYU freshman Haley Bertoldo (53.87). Hawaii’s Erin Mcnulty followed up for third in 54.00. On the men’s side, Hawaii junior Karl Hennebach touched first in an NCAA B qualifying time of 47.28, just two one-hundredths of a second ahead of UCSB’s Wade Allen (47.30). Allen‘s teammates Yossef Tibazi (48.03) and Mickey Mowry (48.44) touched third and fourth, respectively.
Hawaii senior Jasmine Alkhaldi claimed a first-place finish in the 200 Free, along with an MPSF meet record in 1:46.70. Pacific’s Margaux Verger Gourson took second in 1:47.52 ahead of UC Davis’ Samantha Shellem (1:48.11). The Rainbow Warriors continued with a 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s event led by sophomore Victor Goicoechea in 1:36.50. His teammates Eduardo Esgaib Vaz Guim (1:36.77) and Yuri Samouilich (1:37.35) followed up for second and third, respectively. UCSB freshman Billy Mullis touched just one tenth behind for fourth in 1:37.47.
UCSB junior Katie Records claimed a win for the Gauchos in the 100 Breast, touching in an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:02.18. Just five one-hundredths of a second behind was San Diego’s Briana Jurries in 1:02.23. Following up for third was BYU’s Anna Dahl in 1:02.42. On the men’s side, Cal Poly’s Jimmy Deiparine dropped an MPSF meet record to take the 100 Breast in 52.94 ahead of UCSB’s Andres Castilleja (53.21).
BYU’s Haley Bertoldo took home a win for the Cougars in the 100 Back, touching in an NCAA B qualifying time of 53.96. UC Davis’ Hilary Hunt claimed second in 54.42 ahead of Bertoldo‘s teammate Ciera Keller (54.73).
For the men, BYU had another great showing, taking first, third and fourth to rack up serious points. Cougar junior Jake Taylor took home the win in an NCAA A cut of 45.53 ahead of Hawaii’s Ali Maclean (48.34). Following up for third and fourth were BYU teammates Rainer Ng (48.35) and McKay King (49.12).
The Rainbow Warriors swept the diving events, with sophomore Lauren Hall scoring 302.65 points for first ahead of teammate Aimee Harrison (292.60 points). Junior Amund Gismervik took the top spot in the men’s event with 377.10 points.
The UC Davis women took home the win in the 400 Medley relay in 3:40.87 to end the finals session ahead of BYU’s A team (3:41.39). On the men’s side, BYU’s A team (3:12.16) out touched the Gaucho A team (3:12.57) for first place.
