Bidrman, Block and Chekanovych all Sweep Breaststroke Events in Edmonton

Oliver Bidrman of the University of Calgary Swim Club, Jason Block of the University of Calgary Swim Club and Mariya Chekanovych of the Arie Swim Club all completed the sweep of the breaststroke events at the Speedo Western Canadian Open.

Bidrman took the men’s 16 and under 50 breaststroke in a time of 29.90 while Block took the men’s 17 and over event in a time of 28.70.

Chekanovych tied with Kiersten Gilberg of the Vancouver Pacific Swim Club for the gold in  the women’s 16 and over event with both swimmers finishing in a time of 32.98.

Winskill teammates Tai Long Singh and Markus Thormeyer continued their winning ways. Singh picked up the gold in the men’s 16 and under 100 butterfly posting a time of 56.57. Thormeyer picked up his fourth victory of the meet in the 200 backstroke where he recorded a 2:04.06.

Rebecca Smith of Red Deer collected her fourth gold of the Open winning the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:01.76, just off her Alberta age group record of 1:01.35.

Emily Overholt of the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club won her third event taking the women’s 16 and over 400 freestyle in a time of 4:14.55.

The Keyano Swim Club took the women’s 4 x 100 medley in a time of 4:20.38 while the University of Calgary took the men’s event in a time of 3:54.66.

Women’s 15 and under:

  • 400 freestyle – Molly Gowans – UVic-PCS – 4:16.50
  • 200 backstroke – Lauren Crisp – UVic-PCS – 2:17.48
  • 50 breaststroke – Renae Ledoux – LOSC – 33.35

Women’s 16 and over:

  • 100 butterfly – Jessie Gibson – Spart – 1:02.20
  • 200 backstroke – Mackenzie Glover – UMan – 2:16.17

Men’s 16 and under:

  • 400 freestyle – Rafael Danila – Island – 4:00.76
  • 200 backstroke – Josh Zakala – KAJ – 2:05.71

Men’s 17 and over:

  • 400 freestyle – Kier Maitland – Keyano – 3:58.62
  • 100 butterfly – Robert Hill – Chena – 56.95
