Sam Metz
Born Aug. 2, 1991 to parents, Adam and Martha, Sam Metz is a senior at the University of California, Berkeley. Born and raised in Chicago, Ill., Metz attended New Trier High School where he was a three-time Illinois State Champion and a High School All-American. Metz is majoring in Middle Eastern Studies, and is extremely passionate about U.S. and international politics. He’s taken part in political protests at Cal, including the recent Ferguson protests. Metz was a member of the U.S. National Youth Team from 2009-2010, and can swim anything from distance freestyle to the IM and breaststroke events. Metz has returned to the Cal Bears for the 2014-2015 season after sitting out for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons.

2011-2012
During his freshman year Metz made his ‘A’ final debut at the Pac 12 Championships after finishing eighth in the 500 freestyle. He also swam the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle finishing 10th and 14th. At the NCAA Championships he swam the third leg of the 800 freestyle relay that finished fifth, earning him All-America honors.
2014-2015
Metz came back to swim for Cal for his senior season.
National Competition
Metz was a member of the U.S. National Youth Team from 2009-2010, after finishing third in the 400 freestyle and 400 IM at the 2009 Junior National Championships.
