Ohio State’s Michael DiSalle swam a 42.77 in the 100 yard free on Sunday at the Ohio State men’s Last Chance meet – one final post-conference opportunity for swimmers to earn a spot at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Coming into Sunday’s last-chance sessions, a prediction model, thanks to Tait Pinnow, has everyone ranked on the #30 line into the NCAA Championships. As individual swimmers, like DiSalle, earn single invites, that number is likely to tighten up ever-so-slightly.
DiSalle’s swim moves him up into a tie for 20th-place in the country this season, which means that he will be easily in as an individual qualifier for NCAA’s, in addition to what is likely a handful of relay swims for the Buckeyes as well.
- Notre Dame sophomore Tom Anderson swam a 3:45.63 in prelims the 400 IM, which would’ve qualified for NCAA’s last season, but this year leaves him on the outside looking in. He did, however, come back later in a time trial, where he swam a gutsy 3:43.03. That pushes him to 20th in the country this season, which will earn him an NCAA individual qualification.
- Ohio State’s Tamas Gercsak swam a 1:43.92 in the 200 fly, which was just two-tenths short of his 1:43.74 from the Big Ten Championships. That means that he’s still ranked 31st in the country in the 200 fly; count him as one swimmer who will be rooting for the nation-leader, Jack Conger of Texas, to choose the 200 back instead of the 200 fly at NCAA’s.
- North Carolina State’s Adam Linker swam 14:59.20 in the 1650 free, which puts him a nerve-wrecking 30th in the country in the event. A quick scan through the 29 swimmers above him doesn’t show anybody who will obviously drop the event at NCAA’s, so that could leaves him just on the edge of qualifying. It does, however, make him just the 2nd NC State swimmer under 15 minutes in the mile. His teammate Austin Snyder swam 15:04.40 in the same race, which improves him to 3rd on NC State’s all-time rankings. The three fastest milers in school history have all done best times this season.
- The West Virginia men took a pile of attempts at earning NCAA qualifications in a number of different relays, but through prelims and the time trial session, wound up just short.

swimmom – results from last chance meets are updated often within minutes of completion of a session, so it’s very possible that the athletes’ rankings have changed since this article was written. The USASwimming.org database is the official one used by the NCAA.

Hi RJM – we’ll put out a cutline article after the pre-cut selection lists are out. Before then, there’s too many unknowns to really set anything in stone.
