Last year as a freshman Matthew Josa began his onslaught on the Division II records leaving the championships with the 200IM (1:43.96), 200 free (1:34.21), 100 fly (45.45), and 200 backstroke (1:40.74) records all under his belt. Josa wasted no time this morning taking down his 200 IM record touching the wall at 1:43.18. He is currently the top seed by nearly 4 seconds and its safe to assume to former junior world medalist will be looking to break the 1:43 barrier this evening.
Comparative Splits
Josa, 2014- 21.67/25.70/30.58/26.01= 1:43.96
Josa, 2015- 21.87/25.92/29.43/25.96=1:43.18
Josa took out the race roughly a half second slower than he did in last years championship final. It seems he has focused on his breaststroke this season in anticipation of this years NCAA’s. The little over a second difference on the back half of the race was key to Josa taking down his record from last year. With a new best time in the books this morning expect for the Queens sophomore to be out a hair quicker tonight as well as under his record time from the preliminaries.
With his 100 fly record, he would be the 4th seed on the D1 psych sheet.
Why did he go Division 2?
Devan – I would imagine it had a lot to do with his SwimMAC connections.
