Ryan Murphy Breaks Lochte’s NCAA Record Leading Off 400 Medley Relay; Cal Finishes 2nd With New American Record

Ryan Murphy ran away from the field, leading off the 400 medley relay with an impressive 100 backstroke time of 44.17. That time smashed Ryan Lochte’s Championship and NCAA record from 2006 of 44.60. Murphy is now within 1 tenth of a second of Nick Thoman’s American record of 44.07 from the 2013 US Winter National Championships.

Californiaย lead through the first 2 legs of the race with crazy splits from Murphy and Chuck Katis.ย Texas’ย Joseph Schoolingย threw down a 43.9 100 butterfly to run down California’s Justin Lynch and even things up going into the final leg.

California finished second with a final time of 3:01.60, breaking the American record. Texas won the event with a new US Open record of 3:01.23. Joseph Schooling competes for Singapore internationally, which makes the Texas relay ineligible to break the American record.

Take a look at the final splits below:

  • Ryan Murphy – 44.17
  • Chuck Katis – 50.12
  • Justin Lynch – 45.57
  • Seth Stubblefield – 41.84

Impressive! Anyone know how tall Ryan Murphy is? (and Caleb Dressel and Schooling)?
Amazing swims by the Bolles alums.

YES! ๐Ÿ˜Ž
Congrats to Ryan Murphy!
I expected a lot a NCAA record but never expected such a crazy fast time! 44.17! 2nd best performer and 2nd best performance ever! WOW!
He has definitely reached a new level in his sophomore year at Cal and looks ready to take the power of US and world backstroke very quickly.
Bobo Gigi predictions from 3 or 4 years ago: Murphy wins the 100 back and 200 back gold medals in Rio. He looks on track to do it. 52.50 next summer and sub 52 in Rio!
You can read an interview on the USA swimming website. Link here.

Bobo, you’re THE MAN when it comes to predictions, so I wouldn’t bet against you, but I’m hoping Grevers will get keep the gold in Rio and Murphy get the silver in the 100 and Murphy or Clary win the 200 (with the other getting 2nd or 3rd). I don’t want the new guys to win everything YET, let’s give them something to work toward! ๐Ÿ™‚

Who would have thought Cal would get the AR with no foreign a and Tx couldn’t get it because they have a foreign swimmers?

My thoughts exactly. I was wondering when someone would mention that. I swam in the PAC-10 during Cal’s first two NCAA Championships and Cal and ASU (my school) had quite a few international athletes – mostly Scandinavian, British and Canadian.

Murphy’s definitely got an edge right now. The thing is, as great as he is, I’m not even sure if he’ll win it. The way Nolan looked tonight in all of his races, the man is gonna be hard to beat. All the respect in the world to the guys who were able to qualify for the 100 back at this absurdly fast meet, but I think tomorrow is going to be a two man race.

Swim Swam isn’t always totally objective (no one is) but complaining about how they posted this ten minutes before the Texas article is kind of silly..
