Dylan Bosch Vs. Jack Conger: A Race For The 200 Butterfly Belt

2015 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

1650 Freestyle

Northwestern’s Jordan Wilimovsky has really developed his speed in the pool over the last year. He has been on the national scene as an open water distance swimmer since 2011, but it wasn’t until this past year that he gained national attention for his pool swims. Over the summer, he almost beat Michael McBroom (14:56.17) at the US National Championships in the 1500 meter freestyle, finishing third with a 15:16.34 . He qualified for the Pan Pacific Championship team and went on to finish seventh at Pan Pacs.

With his new-found speed in the pool, he is the favorite to win the mile tonight. He has the fastest seed time coming into the meet with a 14:33.50 and is within 10 seconds of Connor Jaeger’s American record.

200 Backstroke

Ryan Murphy made 1:38 look easy to earn the top seed in the 200 backstroke. After breaking Lochte’s NCAA record in the 100 back, we are hoping to see him break Lochte’s American record of 1:36.81. Murphy won this event last year with an NCAA record time of 1:37.35.

100 Freestyle

Prelims of the 100 freestyle were very tight, with the top 8 all finishing between 42.18 and 42.37. Simonas Bilis had the fastest time of the morning, but anyone in this final has the talent to win tonight. Florida’s Caeleb Dressel missed the A final this morning with a 42.39, but after watching him make a huge drop between prelim and finals in the 50 freestyle, don’t be surprised is he swims the fastest time of the night from the B final. His best is 41.90 from the SEC Championships.

200 Breaststroke

Both Will Licon and Kevin Cordes will be racing for their second individual title of the meet. After winning the 400 IM last night, I believe Licon has the confidence to win tonight, but Cordes won’t make it easy. Cordes has only lost to one swimmer during his four years in an NCAA breaststroke final. His freshman year, Cordes finished second to Louisville’s Carlos Almeida. He has won every other breaststroke final at the NCAA Championships during his career.

What did Clark Smith get DQ’d for?

A one-handed touch, according to the meet announcer.

Yep, I figured he would. Schooling is a gutsy guy. I feel terrible for Conger though, I hope this lights a fire under him!

Lol so much for Conger and Bosch, they got “schooled” by Schooling

If this was day one I’d say Conger AR. He might be getting tired after so much relay action though. So I’ll say Schooling gets the double.

There is literally nothing stopping the dudes of the NCAA from making this a tradition. Just pass it along year to year. But it can’t just be an off the shelf WWE rip off belt. It’s got to be obnoxious. Fake diamond studs all over… gold everywhere… and huge. Like enormous.

I love, love, love this idea. I want more professional wrestling involved in swimming: more nicknames, individual theme songs (“Wait, IS THAT CONGER’S MUSIC???”), championship belts, the whole works.

I know “200 Butterfly Belt” was just an expression, but can we seriously start handing out giant, ridiculous championship belts for that event (and that event only) like in pro wrestling? 2nd and 3rd get some nice medals, but the winner gets a huge gold belt that they hold over their head while releasing a primal scream.

Seriously. I would have embraced my fate as a butterflyer much sooner in my career if I’d had that kind of incentive.

It’ll be a very good race, but I think King Cong wins it with a new NCAA record!
