PJ Ransford Breaks Two of Jeff Kostoff’s 31 Year Old 17-18 NAG Records

Michigan freshman PJ Ransford went after the 1650, leading out the final heat from the outside lane. He lead through the final 200 before Georgia’s Matias Koski ran him down for the NCAA title. Ranford finished with a final time of 14:34.36, breaking Jeff Kostoff‘s 31 year old record of 14:38.22 from 1984.

Prior to his swim tonight, Ransford had the fourth fastest 17-18 1650 freestyle in history with a 14:46.46. His time from tonight will stand as the 15th fastest 1650 freestyle in history. Koski’s winning time of 14:32.38 was the 12th fastest swim in history.

Ransford does not turn 19 until Sep. 8th of this year.

We overlooked Ransford’s 1000 split initially, but commenter “PK” pointed out that his time at the 1000 , 8:46.40, also breaks Kostoff’s 17-18 NAG record of 8:48.57 from 1983.
