Longhorns Test Meters Times 3 Days After NCAA Champsionship in Low-Key Speed Practice

SwimSwam was a fly-on-the-wall for a University of Texas Longhorns “meters test practice” Wednesday, April 1st.

After a big emotional high last weekend, winning the 2015 Men’s NCAA DI Swimming and Diving Championships, Coach Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik wanted to test their athletes’ meters speed.

We do this to see where we’re at. It tells us how we hit our taper, and we were spot-on for NCAAs, but a bit too extended for meters swims right after. We still had some fast times for a practice atmosphere.  We’ll take this experience, learn from it and use it going forward.

— Head Coach Eddie Reese

Coach Kris Kubik described the practice as very low-key. The swims for time were optional.  Coach Kubik shared a few notable swims:

Joe Schooling and Tripp Cooper were 52.8 in the 100m fly.

Austin Temple dropped a 1:02 in the 100m breast.

Jack Conger swam 49.5 and Matt Ellis was 49.9 in the 100m free.

Clay Youngquist was a 1:49.4 in the 200m free.

Considering the Longhorns Men’s program is one of the greatest in history, this may be of value to young coaches and swimmers looking for insight into how a top program transitions from one season to the next.

Thank you Mel and Swimswam!

Just curious –
1) Do they (Texas) have any long course (50m) practice during the college (NCAA) season?
2) Also, how do some of these times compare with the just concluded championship results (not just in terms of numbers but by way of insight into preparedness for the LC season)? Thanks

We’re media…and it “was” a practice, something media isn’t typically invited to. We were lucky to catch this…(and UT produces/shares a lot of media via UTsports.com). They suggested brief social media, and that’s what we shared. As we near championship meets, we’ll roll out longer features. I’m just thankful Kris shared a few times…something good to know after they came off of a full taper and a big meet as they head into LC. They have young talent. This LC season should be very interesting.

Austin Temple also dropped a 28.3 50 breast like straight fire
