Final Roster Spots On The Line For Canadian World Champs Team – 12 Qualified, Seven More Could

CURRENT WORLD CHAMPS ROSTER GOING INTO DAY FOUR PRELIMS

  • Dominique Bouchard -100, 200 back
  • Martha McCabe -200 breast
  • Jeremy Bagshaw -200 free
  • Russell Wood -100 back
  • Hilary Caldwell – 100, 200 back
  • Michelle Williams – 100 free
  • Chantal VanLandeghem – 100 free
  • Sydney Pickrem – 400 IM
  • Emily Overholt -400 IM
  • Ryan Cochrane – 400 free
  • Noemie Thomas – 100 Fly
  • Katerine Savard – 100 Fly

Going into the final day of competition there have been 12 swimmers who have guaranteed spots on the worlds team based on Swimming Canada’s priority once selection, and it seems six more could qualify.

Tonight, there’s the possibility for a few more swimmers to grab a spot on the team. In the 200m fly Audrey Lacroix is looking to secure a spot on the Worlds roster. She wasn’t able to do that in the 100m fly on day three, however the 200m fly is her speciality.

Lacroix was a 2:11.96 this morning, but she’ll have to be faster tonight if she wants to grab a spot on the team. She could also take a roster spot if she comes first or second and swims at least a 2:10.46. That would put her on the roster based on the ‘priority two’ selection of having two ‘top 16’ B times and having a top two finish in an event.

Heading to the women’s 50m freestyle both Michelle Williams and Chantal Van Landeghem have the potential to add one more event to their schedule. They both made the worlds team in the 100m freestyle, and as long as they make the ‘B’ time tonight they should be good to swim the 50 as well.

Williams was just one one-hundredth off the ‘top 16’ time this morning with Van Landeghem right behind her.

In the men’s 50 free Alex Loginov, and Karl Krug are both close to the ‘top 16’ standard. They were both 22.3 this morning, and will need to drop below a 22.09 if they want to secure a roster spot.

Sydney Pickrem (who’s already made the team in the 400 IM) and Erika Seltenreich Hodgson could each qualify in the 200m IM tonight. They need to meet a 2:12.98 standard. Both were just slightly off this morning. Pickrem was a 2:14 low, Seltenreich-Hodgson a 2:14 high.

Evan White could be one of the few additions to the men’s team if he’s able to swim a lifetime best in the 200m IM. He wasn’t all that hot this morning, sporting a 2:02.87, but if he can crack 2:00 like he has before and go a 1:59.22 he’s on the team.

In the distance events Ryan Cochrane is almost a lock to grab an event birth in the 1500m freestyle. In the women’s 800, Tabitha Baumann’s seed time is within a few seconds of the 8:28.46 she’ll need to qualify.

Who Could Qualify Under Priority Two?

Santo Condorelli has the chance to make the team under priority two tonight. He won the 100m freestyle with a ‘top 16 B’ time and will need to grab another tonight. If he does, he’ll be on the worlds team.

Condorelli needs to go a 22.25 tonight in the 50m freestyle to make the team. His placing doesn’t really matter, as long as he betters that time.

Couldn’t a second male distance swimmer qualify in the 1500 tonight?

I agree. We could see someone qualify behind Cochrane. I also think that Sandrine Mainville has an outside shot in the 50.

Mackenzie – Very possible. I could see Eric Hedlin, Kier Maitland, or Will Brothers do it. They’re all going in with seeds around 15:15. It’ll take a 15:05 plus a second place finish (assuming Cochrane’s first) to qualify for Worlds.

Hedlin and Brothers were both under the mark at the 2013 trials (15:03 and 15:02 respectively) so hopefully one (or both) repeat that time tonight.

If both do, only one will make it as per the ‘priority one’ selection criteria. Again, assuming Cochrane finishes first.
