Brandonn Almeida Breaks Brazilian 1500 Free Record To Highlight Day 2 of Maria Lenk Trophy

Special thanks to D'Artagnan Dias for contributing to this report.

The second day of the Maria Lenk Trophy, Brazil’s long course national championships, saw Brandonn Almeida break the Brazilian record in the 1500 free.

Men's 200 Breaststroke:

In a very cold afternoon, It was a very disputed race between four swimmers (Felipe França, Thiago Simon, Andreas Mickosz, and Felipe Lima) with França (Corinthians) opening in 29.65, and Lima (Minas) taking the lead in 100 (1:02.91). The 100 breast World Bronze medalist, Lima faded in the third length and the 100 breast SC World Champ, França faded at the last end, but it was enough for Bronze. Simon (Corinthians) made his own race and finished with a strong coming home to win in 2:11.79. His nineteen year-old teammate, Andreas Mickosz, made a strong third and fourth legs to win his first silver medal at Maria Lenk. Thiago Simon time from finals (2:10.58) and Pereira's prelims time (2:11.54) are the ones qualified for Kazan.

Women's 200 Breaststroke:

A three woman battle with two Argentinian women (Minas's Macarena Ceballos and Unisanta's Julia Sebastian) and a Brazilian (Corinthians Pamela Alencar). Ceballos opened ahead (34.51), but Alencar toke the lead at 100 (1:11.81) and Sebastian pulled ahead at 150 and never looked back to win with 2:28.38 juts 3 hundredths off of her Argentinian record. Ceballos was second (2:29.95, over two seconds time drop) and Alencar was third in 2:30.31.

Men's 100 Butterfly:

Arthur Mendes (Corinthians) made a controlled race passing in third and increasing his tempo in the last 5 meters to win in a personal best, 52.33 and Kazan cut, winning his first major title. Henrique Martins (Minas) got silver in 52.53 and teammate Thiago Pereira made a "come from behind finish" and got bronze with 52.57. Pereira will join Mendes with his finals time (52.27) in Kazan.

Women's 100 Butterfly:

Daynara De Paula (SESI-SP), normally opening strong, was only third (28.19), but made a great coming home to be the sole 58 to win in 58.82. Bruna Rocha (Corinthians) got Silver in 59.75 and Daiane Dias (Minas) third in 1:00.29. De Paula and Dias will go to Kazan with their Open times (58.36 and 58.49, respectively).

Men's 1500 Freestyle:

The best race of the day, with Minas's Miguel Leite Valente opening strong taking the early lead, sustaining till 950 meters, when eighteen years-old Brandonn Almeida (Corinthians) stayed to his own strategy, lowering splits down at the finish to close with a 28.15 in the last 50 (57.77 in the last 100) for a new Brazilian record of 15:12.20 and Kazan cut(and over ten seconds drop!). Lucas Kanieski (Minas) made a very good race to earn silver in 15:14.18, just two tenths from the Kazan cut. Leite Valente paid for his early lead fading to third with 15:22.84. Noteworthy, Guilherme Costa made Junior Worlds cut with 15:31.87.

Is that normal for Brazil to take top two time for any session? It doesn’t have to be finals or top two?

Hulk Swim,
no matter when you do the best time(preliminary or finals), the best time is in.There is an exceptional rule for relays:if you did not swam an event(example 100free or 100back) you can request your relay opening to be valid. But will serve only for a relay slot(you cannot kick off the top two).

That’s interesting. The US teams of years past would look different if we did that 🙂
