Missy Franklin becomes Laureus Ambassador

Over the weekend, swimming star Missy Franklin was announced as a Laureus Ambassador in a Laureus USA ceremony in Berkeley, California.

Laureus is a worldwide organization that describes itself on its website as working to “harness the power of sport to promote social change (and celebrate sporting excellence).”

Franklin has a lengthy connection with Laureus, having been nominated for the organization’s World Sport Awards in 2012 and 2014.

Laureus Ambassadors are current or former athletes who are recognized as role models and join Laureus in accomplishing organization goals. You can see the full roster of Laureus Ambassadors on the Laureus site here; the list also includes former Dutch swimmer Pieter van den Hoogenband.

Laureus has posted an album of photos from the ceremony, which you can view here.

So is this part of her professional swimming career now, like is she getting paid/sponsored by this organization, or is this like a charity representation that any top athlete could do unprofessionally?

I think the Laureus Ambassador position is volunteer work; although I’m sure they pay her travel expenses, etc.
