Glauber Silva breaks only meet record on day 1 of Brazil Winter Champs

A quiet start to the Brazil Winter Junior and Senior Champs saw just one meet record fall, the 50 fly to Glauber Henrique Silva.

Silva was 23.87 for that win, getting two tenths under the old meet record.

The major meet in Brazil this season was the Maria Lenk Trophy, so only a small contingent of the nation’s best are competing at this week’s event. Still, some well-known names won events on opening night.

Felipe Franca took the 50 breaststroke in the senior division, going 28.04. That was seven tenths up on the next finisher, his teammate Pedro Cardona.

Daynara de Paulo took home the title in the women’s 50 fly, going 26.80. She was the only woman under 27 seconds.

In both of those races, the depth was really lacking beyond the top 2. In the men’s breaststroke, third place was back in the 29s, while the third-place finisher in the women’s butterfly didn’t break 28.

Etiene Medeiros is one of the most well-known names competing in Brasilia this week, and she won the women’s 100 back, though her 1:04.31 suggested she’s back into heavy training. Medeiros was out in 30.73, but struggled some in the back half. She still won by well over two seconds.

The meet features juniors and seniors swimming together in prelims, but separates them into classes at night. The women’s Junior II 100 back went to Natalia de Luccas in 1:03.83. De Luccas, a young swimmer who already owns the South American record in the 200 back, also won her event by two seconds.

Guilherme Guido took home the men’s 100 back, going 55.51 to best a 55.57 from Ernesto Fernando Santos. Guido actually trailed early but ran down Santos for the win.

Glauber Silva suspended for 2 years from May 2012. So in mid 2014 he can compete again.

We might still see the Santana age records being broken. Felipe Ribeiro wants to go 48 and he split a 22,06 on the 4×50 relay
