Peter Robinson, who swims for the Coto Golf & Racquet Club Coyotes, has committed to swim for Southwestern University beginning in the fall of 2015. Robinson is a senior at Tesoro High School in Orange County’s Rancho Santa Margarita. He didn’t begin swimming until his freshman year, and only then because he didn’t make the baseball team’s cut and there were no cuts for swimming.
Robinson spent the first two years on the Open/Novice team, but he earned his varsity letter by the end of sophomore year. He decided to get serious about swimming as a junior, and began doing doubles – morning workouts with the high school team and afternoons with the club team.
His determination caught the attention of Coyotes head coach Todd Conrad who invited Robinson to move up to the senior group last May. Robinson told SwimSwam, “Best decision I ever made. Even still, I’m a massive newbie to club swimming, and it’s all still really new and exciting!”
Robinson’s best SCY times are:
Event | 2014-15 | 2013-14 |
100 free | 50.05 | 55.53 |
200 free | 1:50.84 | 2:00.12 |
500 free | 5:00.15 | 5:50 |
1000 free | 10:15.33 | – |
200 back | 2:06.01 | – |
In addition, Robinson split a 49.3 on COTO’s 4×100 free relay at the CA/NV Sectionals in December.
“I really like Southwestern because of the challenging academics and the fact that they had a strong Kinesiology program. Coach Duncan runs a very tight ship there and is very organized, something I like in a coach. What really drew me to the team was how close knit they were. They also explained how in D3, every single person is there because they love swimming, there’s no money playing a part. Just purely the love of swimming, and that’s what really struck a chord with me.”
Austin Trinity Aquatic Club senior Jordan Smits has committed to swim at Southwestern University in the 2015-2016 season. Smits is continuing a return to daily pool training after shoulder injuries, and is excited to take her comeback to the Pirates’ Waltzel Natatorium in Georgetown, TX.
Smits’ top times include:
- 50 free – 26.06
- 100 free – 56.99
- 100y back – 1:04.55
SU Head Coach Jon Duncan is looking forward to the contributions Smits will bring to his Pirates, saying “We expect Jordan to help our team in sprint events and relays.”
Southwestern University added men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in 1998, and competes in Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).
