ONE

She is fluent in Spanish. After Stanford, Misty spent a semester in Santiago, Chile. Now, Misty is a popular guest speaker in Latin America where she can do her speeches and clinics in Spanish.

TWO

Misty turned down significant prize money and the cover of a Wheaties Box to finish her degree at Stanford because she knew her undergrad and post graduate degrees would ultimately pay off more. Misty epitomizes student first, athlete second, and world traveler third. She has an MBA in Hospitality from the esteemed Les Roches University in Switzerland, earned after her time spent abroad in Chile.

THREE

Misty knows how to run a hotel and host a great open water event. After graduating from the program in Switzerland, she lived in St. Croix for several years learning all of the ins and outs of hotel management at the famous Buccaneer Resort where the annual St. Croix Coral Reef Swim is held every fall. FOUR

She dominated butterfly races for close to 8 years. From 1994 to 2001, Misty dominated the butterfly events at all levels . Misty finished high school as Swimming World’s Swimmer of the Year in 1997 after setting the national high school record in the 100 fly and 100 back. The 100 fly record lasted for 15 years. Before graduating from Stanford with honors, she led the Lady Cardinals with over 26 All-American titles, 13 US titles and 5 NCAA titles. She even held the World Record in the 100 SCM fly for a period in 1996 and 1997.

FIVE

Misty has been teaching swimming around the world for 15 years, with a breadth of experience that makes her one of the top female Olympic instructors and motivators in the world. She is a wonderful communicator with humor and enthusiasm and has a unique perspective gathered from her experiences with many different cultures. Her story and her swim will excite you to dream big and swim big!

SIX

Oh yea, The Swim! It’s been named one of the top upsets in Olympic history! After years of mastering the dolphin kick and finding the perfect Butterfly rhythm, Misty put together the her dream swim to upset the defending Olympic Champion and world record holder, to win the Gold Medal in an American Record and take over the title as Madame Butterfly.

Misty will be leading 3 BREAKout! Swim Clinics this weekend in the Upper Midwest. Friday night is at Lake Geneva YMCA with Ian Crocker, Saturday she and Ian will be working with the Masters of Lake Geneva. And Sunday she will be teaching in Glenview, Chicago hosted by Big Blue Aquatics.

Misty wowed the world when she upset the famous Aussie, Susie O’Neil, in the 200m butterfly at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games to win Gold and break the American Record. Within seconds, she also won the hearts of millions with her contagious smile and warm personality. Misty had set numerous high school records with her amazing dolphin kick and then the rules changed to only a 15 meter dolphin kick. Her and her coaches, Bob Gillet and Richard Quick, adjusted and found ways to get faster. Always one to believe in herself, pay attention to details and not be afraid to race, Misty swam the race of her life when it mattered most. Recognized as a pioneer in the sport for her innovative underwater dolphin kick, Misty won 13 US and five NCAA national titles.

Misty is a master clinician and motivator having taught around the world for the last 14 years. Misty now coaches and teaches in her hometown of Phoenix, AZ and is also a spokeswoman for USMS. Check out latest video here:

She also holds quite a few American Records in Fin Swimming (6) and was in the finals in the 50m Apnea in Hungary!

I never get tired of that video. Misty sprinted the whole way! I remember my family and friends from the west coast emailed me (before texting) and spoiled the surprise for me, but it was still great to see.
