Fast swimming continued during the third day of competition at the 2015 Southwest Classic in Arizona, as Margo Geer took home another win, this time in the 50m freestyle.
Geer dropped over a second from her prelim time to once again take down Paige Kremer and claim gold for Tucson Ford Dealer Aquatics. At the wall, Geer was a 25.39 to Kremer’s 26.26, absolutely dominating the race. Bonnie Brandon managed to take third in 26.98.
That time for Geer is the second fastest she’s been all season, and the fastest she’s been on American soil this year. Just like in the 100m freestyle, Geer grabbed a season-best time in the 50m freestyle at the BHP Aquatic Super Series in Australia at the end of January.
There, she was a 25.09. The fastest she has been in the U.S this season was a 25.53 that she swam at the Arena Pro Swim Series Mesa.
Just like in the 100m freestyle, it appears as though Geer is getting faster and faster this season based solely on the comparison of her in-season swims from this season to last. Last season, her fastest in-season 50m free was a 25.63 that she swam at the 2014 Los Angeles Invite. She also swam a 25.77 at that meet, the only two times she was under 26-seconds in-season.
During the 2014-2015 season, Geer has only swum one 50 free over 26-seconds in the six times she has contested the event. Her slowest time prior to the Southwest Classic was a 25.95 from the BHP Super Series. She was a 26.48 in prelims before going a 25.39 in finals at this meet.
Currently Geer is just out of the top-25 globally event where three American women currently reside in the rankings.
Geer wasn’t the only one showing off some speed however, as Brad Tandy was also fairly quick in the 50m freestyle. He won the men’s race with a time of 22.89, being the only swimmer under 23-seconds that evening. In a rare appearance, Nick Thoman swam the 50 free, finishing third with a 23.74.
Overall, the men’s freestyle events have been fairly fast at this competition. Darian Townsend swam a decent 200 free to kick things off for the men on night three, sporting a 1:52.55 at the wall. Townsend also won the 100 free on night two.
The meet will wrap up tonight with day four finals.
Her 100 was better than her 50, relatively speaking. Maybe top 6 in the 100 is a better chance than top 2 in the 50 for Omaha next year?!?
Today you can’t hope anything if you don’t swim under 24.50. In terms of world or olympic final.
