2015 Arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara: Saturday PM Heat Sheets-Boyle Scratches, Clark Smith Drops 2Fly

2015 ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES AT SANTA CLARA

Clark Smith of Longhorn Aquatics scratched the men’s 200 fly, presumably to focus on the 400 free. Smith posted the morning’s top times in each event, but will only be swimming the latter tonight. That leaves Chase Kalisz and Michael Phelps of North Baltimore and Tom Shields of California Aquatics, in the middle lanes.

In the men’s 50 free, Federico Grabich of Argentina pulled out of the B final, making way for Puerto Rico’s Erik Risolvato to move up from the middle lane of the C final. Grabich also scratched the 100 back, putting Gator Swim Club’s Corey Main into the championship and University of Calgary’s Russell Wood into the B final.

Both Rachel Bootsma of California Aquatics and Femke Heemskerk of Netherlands scratched the final of the women’s 100 back. Guatemala’s Gisela Morales and Tasija Karosas will now contest the A final. South Florida’s Carolina Colorado, who pulled out of the B final, allowed Tucson Ford’s Bonnie Brandon to move up.

In the women’s 200 breast, Caitlin Leverenz of California Aquatics scratched the B final. Ohio State’s Amy Bopp moved up from the C final to take her place.

Cullen Jones of SwimMAC scratched the B final of the men’s 50 fly; he will swim the 50 free, though. Taking his spot in the fly will be Andrew Liang of Stanford Swimming.

New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle scratched the A final of the 400 free. Her absence tonight will move Club Wolverine’s Gillian Ryan into the championship. Madyson Cox pulled out of the B final, meaning both Katie Drabot of Ozaukee Aquatics and Lindsey Clary of Ohio State get to move up to the B.

And finally, it’s worth noting that the entire final of the men’s 400 free will be intact, hopefully leading to a spectacular race among some of the world’s best mid-distance freestylers.

Finals begin at 5 p.m. Pacific Time/ 8 p.m. Eastern Time, and will be broadcast on Universal Sports and will stream live on USA Swimming.

I think that Clark Smith wants a big 400 free tonight.

Bobo, do you think a sub 3:50 would be possible?

In prelims, Mr. Smith looked very smooth and controlled until he threw his kick in with about 25-30M to go. I think he definitely has gas in the tank to get under 3:50 and, with Jaeger’s 200 free last night, I think it will take sub 3:50 to win it. It should be an excellent race.

McBroom was 1:50.07 in the 200, and took the 800 the first night. He will be right there as well. He’s my favorite tonight, but just so.

It appears you all had some insight into tonights mens distance race! I too felt that sub 3:50 was in order to take the mens 400; I thought that the outcome would be the top two, but Jaeger in a time closer to 46 or 47 with McBroom close in tow. It just worked out that the morning swims put the top two in outside lanes on opposite sides. Could have been a little faster had they qualified a little better!

However not a real surprise with the last two evenings outcomes. The 1500 should be a good race tomorrow, with Ous in the mix as well! Is Smith swimming the mile? he could maybe be a factor as well?
