FFN, the French swimming federation, published a press release today supporting former World Champs bronze medalist Melanie Henique, who is recovering from an assault a few weeks ago.
Henique says she was attacked by four men on June 26th, while she and some friends were leaving a restaurant. The men allegedly asked Henique and her companions for cigarettes, but the exchange grew more hostile until one of the men hit Henique.
It’s been speculated that the attack was based on Henique’s sexual orientation – she is a lesbian, and after the attack, she criticized the “homophobic climate in France today.”
Her injuries forced her to pull out of the French Open, but the press release from FFN today appears hopeful she will be able to compete for the national team at this summer’s World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
You can read the full statement, in its original French, here. A rough translation says that the FFN and Henique’s club will do everything they can to aid Henique’s recovery so that she can compete with the team in Kazan, noting that her teammates on the national team have also been very supportive of Henique’s recovery.
The release also compliments Henique for her response to the incident and for speaking out publicly against violent interactions like it.
The World Championships are now just under a month away in Kazan, Russia.
As an international follower of crime , I look forward to seeing the 4 mugshots & under what law they are prosecuted , their defence & verdict .
Don’t take us half the way .
Best wishes Mel.
Show that you’re a very strong young woman, much stronger and much more courageous than these pathetic and cowardly 4 little men.
In my long swimming life, I have never seen so much bad luck/misfortune associated with an upcoming world championships let alone a swimming meet. I am holding my breath that nothing else happens to anyone. I am hoping Melanie competes in Kazan since this is what she has worked so long and so hard for. Bon chance, Mlle Henique. Tout mon mieux pour vous.
Good try in French.
