LAS VEGAS – For the second straight year UNLV saw two swimmers receive CSCAA (College Swim Coaches Association of America) Scholar All-America honors, while another four earned Scholar All-America Honorable Mention status, as the men’s and women’s individual honors were announced by the organization last week.
Both Boris Kulizhikov and Henrique Machado were named to the Scholar All-America team for the first time in their career. Kulizhikov, a freshman from Irkutsk, Russia, swam the breast leg on both the 200 and 400 medley relays for the Rebels at the NCAA Championships, helping both squads to 21st place finishes.
Machado, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, swam on two Relay Honorable Mention All-America teams at the 2015 NCAA Championships, anchoring the 11th place 200 free relay and the 13th place 400 free relay. He was also the leadoff leg on UNLV’s two medley relays at the national meet, while participating in the 100 back where he placed 32nd. That capped off a strong season for Machado, following the WAC Championships where he claimed both the 100 and 200 back events, which included a new conference record time in the 100 back. He also swam on UNLV’s WAC champion 200 and 400 medley relays, along with Kulizhikov.
Earning Honorable Mention status from the women’s squad was Elena Gavrilova for the second straight year. She was joined by Julia Fehervari and Michelle Troup. Senior diver Lucas James represented the UNLV men in receiving Honorable Mention recognition.
To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a “B” time standard or, for diving, competed at their respective qualifying meets.
