The field for the 2015 FINA World Championships continues to solidify, with Bermuda bringing a two-person squad, according to The Royal Gazette.
Bermuda will be represented by Rebecca Heyliger and Julian Fletcher later this month at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia, per the Royal Gazette.
The roster will not include Bermuda’s best-ever sprinter, Roy Burch. The national record-holder is done for the season after rupturing both of his patella tendons during a dryland warmup at his home training base, SwimMAC Carolina.
But both Heyliger and Fletcher are national record-holders for Bermuda, and they’ll look to cover for the missing Burch in Kazan.
Heyliger only recently etched her name into the national record books, breaking the 50 freestyle record at the Bermuda National Championships with a 26.58.
She’ll compete in the 50 free and 100 free in Russia later on this summer.
Fletcher, meanwhile, is the national record-holder in both the 50 breast and 100 breast. The Gazette reports that he’ll swim the 100 and 200 backstrokes, but that’s likely a misprint, as Fletcher seems more likely to swim the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in Kazan.
Both were college standouts in the American NCAA system. Fletcher was a four-year letterwinner at SMU, while Heyliger was a captain with the USC Trojans.
