Weekend Roundup: Gophers wrap WUGs, kick off Pan Ams

The 2015 World University Games wrapped this past weekend in Gwangju, South Korea. Jakub Maly closed out the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter IM (4:22.09), while Gophers teammate Matt Barnard picked up ninth in platform diving with a total of 355.35 points. Maly will gear up for the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia where he once again represent Team Austria in a few weeks.

Three Gophers are in Toronto, Canada for the 2015 Pan American Games, where Kierra Smith and Samantha Harding are representing Canada and Kiera Janzen will compete for Team USA.

Saturday’s open water 10k race featured Harding and her eighth-place finish with a time of 2:04:37.7. Smith will compete in her event, the 200-meter breaststroke, on Wednesday, July 15 , and Janzen is set to race the 200-meter freestyle on Wednesday as well and will swim the 400-meter freestyle on Friday, July 17.

2015 graduate Rebecca Weiland is travelling to Winnipeg, Canada with 13 other Minnesota student-athletes to serve alongside two local homeless shelters. Follow along with updates of the volunteer trip at the Gopher Global website.

The Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center will host the USA Swimming Speedo Sectionals (Central Zone Section 1) this week. Competition will begin on Wednesday, July 15 and will run through Saturday, July 18 with prelims at 9:00 a.m. CT and finals at 6:00 p.m. CT each day. Around 25 Gophers will be among those competing.

Single session admission with a heat sheet is $5.00 and All-Session pass with a psych sheet and heat sheets is $30.00 will be available for purchase throughout the meet. Come support us at the pool!
