2015 Pan Am Games Day 2 Medal Count: Updated with Relay Appeal

Note that at the time of original publishing, the medal table did not include the men’s 4x200m free relay totals for any of the participants.  The U.S. has since won its disqualification appeal and the medal table included below now renders the official results.

Canada is still on top of the total swimming medal count after day two of the 2015 Pan American Games.  The Americans did get a boost today, but Brazil keeps powering its way through the events with some incredible swimming of its own.

The Canadian women were just on an absolute tear tonight, wrangling in a double 1-2 finish on the night in individual events.  In the 200m breaststroke, Kierra Smith locked down the gold with teammate Martha McCabe right behind her and finishing strongly for a runner-up silver.  Hilary Caldwell and Dominique Brouchard followed suit in the women’s 200m backstroke event, where they also touched in 1-2 fashion as well to give the Canadians 4 medals over just these two races.

The U.S. started with night with the much-needed spark to get momentum underway for the team after a relatively lackluster day one.  Americans Sean Lehane and Carter Griffin scored two medals for Team USA, finishing in gold and silver positions, respectively in the 200m backstroke event. Allison Schmitt cranked out an incredible 200m freestyle swim to grab the gold and add to the medal tally for the Americans.

Another silver medal was won in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, but only after much delay.  As of last night,  the U.S. team was initially disqualified due to Michael Weiss’ fingers being taped, violating FINA rules.  This morning, however, news broke that the U.S. indeed won its appeal of the rules violation, rendering the original results as official.  Brazil remains the gold-medal winner in the event, followed by the U.S. in silver and Canada in bronze in the men’s 4x200m free relay.

Brazilian beast, Joao De Lucca dominated in the 200m freestyle as he did in prelims, to give the gold to his country, as well as play a big part in his squad’s winning the 4x200m freestyle relay. Thiago Simon added another gold to Brazil’s sparkling night by winning the men’s 200m breaststroke, setting a new Games record of his own.

Ricardo & Rafael – at the time of original publishing, the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay results were unofficial and, therefore, were not included in the medal totals.
