Miriam Sheehan Breaks 10&U 100m Fly NAG with 1:08.22

Ten-year-old Miriam Sheehan of Phoenix Swim Club in Paradise Valley, Arizona, just added another National Age Group Record to her portfolio, blasting a 1:08.22 in the 100 meter butterfly during prelims of the Arizona Swimming Long Course Age Group State Championships.

The swim was a .82 improvement from her seed time, and it broke the NAG record by .45. The previous record of 1:08.67 was set by Joy Jiang of Westchester Aquatic Club at the Eastern Zone Long Course Age Group Championships in August, 2014.

Sheehan, who currently holds the NAG record in the 50 fly (30.43) was out like a rocket, coming within a half-second of that time in her leadoff 50. She came back in 37.26 to lower Jiang’s mark by .45.

It is interesting to note the difference in the way the two girls swam to their records. The comparative splits are as follows:

Sheehan Jiang
July, 2015 August, 2014
30.96 32.58
37.26 36.09
1:08.22 1:08.67

Sheehan will have another crack at the record in finals tonight. She might very well become the first ten-year-old girl in history to swim under the 1:08 barrier if she can keep her second 50 in the 36s. Stay tuned.

I swear this girl looked at least 18 when I first saw the picture. If only I was that size at 15 I would’ve pretty good. When do they start drug tests anyway?

That’s impressive.
She’s really a speedy girl.
I predict she will be the first 10 and under US girl to break the 30-second barrier in the 50 fly this weekend.
