In the women’s 100 fly at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games, Isabella Paez broke the Venezuelan national record in the 100 fly with her time of 1:00.79.
Here’s a closer look at her splits from prelims to finals:
Prelims: 28.76/32.51 = 1:01.27
Finals: 28.62/32.17 = 1:00.79
Paez experienced a larger drop in finals in the back half of her race, but she was simply better on both 50s of her race when comparing her splits from prelims to finals. She ended up winning the B final of the 100 fly with this swim to produce the new national record time. The old record belonged to Elimar Barrios, who set it at 1:01.19 at the CAC Games in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico nearly five full years ago.
Paez, who swims for the Duke University in the United States, represents Venezuela internationally and has been on multiple national rosters for her home country. At Duke, she set the program record in the 200 butterfly as a freshman, and looks to lead an ACC team that’s growing in size and talent of late. The rising Duke sophomore, at these Pan Am Games, also made it to the championship final of the 200 butterfly. She wound up 6th overall in 2:13.64, while her country mate Andreina Pinto grabbed fourth with a new national record of 2:09.51. Paez is set to swim the butterfly leg of Venezuela’s 4×100 medley relay tomorrow, in the final day of competition at the Pan Am Games.
