Entry lists for the 2015 FINA World Swimming Championships have been released before Sunday’s beginning of competition in Kazan, Russia.
The biggest mystery prior to the release was the schedule of Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu, who was the only member of the Hungarian team who didn’t share her event schedule when their roster was released three weeks ago.
Now we know that she’s entered in 7 events, though just two of those are as the top seed.

- 100 back
- 200 free
- 200 fly
- 100 free
- 200 back
- 400 IM*
Other Notes
- None of the leading Americans’ schedules are a surprise (theirs were announced months ago), though the entry lists validate that the Americans are truly only having Rachel Bootsma in the women’s 50 meter backstroke and Tim Phillips in the 50 meter fly. The former of those is especially a challenge given how well Natalie Coughlin swam at the Pan Am Games and her potential for a medal in that race.
- China’s Sun Yang is swimming the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles individually, choosing to hang on to a full schedule even after showing mixed results since his return from a brief doping suspension last year. He’s the defending champion in the 400, 800, and 1500 meter freestyles.
- South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh, the defending Olympic Champion in the 100 breast and World Champion in the 50 breast, is entered to swim the 200 breaststroke in Kazan. He’s never swum that race before at the World Championships, so this will be a step outside of his comfort zone.
- Chad le Clos is swimming the 50, 100, and 200 meter butterflies, plus the 200 free. That means no 200 IM – a race in which he’s shown a lot of international promise, but has frequently danced-away-from at the last moments.
- Russian Vlad Morozov is swimming the 50 and 100 free and the 50 back. He’s got speed to contend over 50 meters of any stroke, but will stay focused on his two Olympic events in the sprint freestyles.
- Sarah Sjostrom has stuck true to her word and will swim the 50 and 100 free and the 50 and 100 fly in Kazan. That means no 200 free, despite being ranked 2nd in the world in the event.
- It is confirmed, as we reported Sunday, no Mireia Belmonte at the World Championships.
Izotov is entered in 200 free after he said he was only in relays….interesting
I’d like to see a discussion on possible upsets waiting to brew. There’s obvious ones that Horton over Sun in the 400free, or Horton/Paltrinieri over Sun in the 400free, but there are other ones that look just as likely:
– someone over LeClos in the 100fly (I believe the 100fly falls into the category @TM mentioned above)
– Cseh/Set over LeClos in the 200fly
– USA outside of the 4x100free podium
– Sjostrom winning the 100free over the Campbells
– Seebohm over Franklin in the 100back (is this an upset?)
– Franklin falling to Hosszu to Seebohm in the 200back– less likely.

Hard to pick these events. There are very few events where the top 2-3 clearly separate from the rest of the field (men’s 200 free, 100 back and 20″ breast are some examples of events that are Pick’em)

On another subject: is the U.S. men’s open water olympic team selected based on world championship results? If so the olympic team was effectively picked two years ahead of Rio. Nobody else has a shot? Or will we have a trials before Rio?
The beach – all Olympic open water spots are determined by this year’s World Championships results, for swimmers from every nation. The U.S. selected their open water Worlds swimmers at Open Water Nationals this past April, so their potential Olympic swimmers were selected about 1 year and 4 months out from the Olympics.

On July 19th it was already known what schedule Hosszu would have(officiall dedaline for all swimmers). I am somewhat flabbergasted how Swim Swam did not know about it until now….
What source released the official entries on July 19th?
I think SwimSwam reported on what they “guessed” her entry list would like but now it is “official” according to the Dina start list as of today.
The article states that the Iron Lady kept the entries secret until now (Everyone speculated though)
Her schedule was known earlier, somebody also mentioned the 7 events she would swim already on the 20th, on this site in the comments section (predicting her times in Kazan)…
We’ll know in 10 days if Katie Ledecky was right to add the 200 free to an already grueling freestyle schedule.
I know I’m in the minority but I think it was an error.
400 free/800 free/1500 free/4X200 free relay was enough for one week.
I would have wished she starts her 200 free campaign only in Rio where there will not be the 1500 free. And next year she will have still more speed in her and ready for the gold. I don’t think she is ready for the gold right now. And the 1500 free will take her a lot of energy to play with fast girls like Missy or Federica.

It’s a good thing that Phelps, Lochte, Yang, Hackett, Thorpe, Caulkins, Woodhead, Babashoff, Gould, Spitz, Meyer, etc never listened to your advice.
Hosszu’s schedule looks quite “lean” based on her in season racing. She will win up to 5 individual medals with freestyle as the stroke she will likely come short for a podium finish
Super confusing as to why Katinka entered the 100 free. That seems like a large waste of her time.
