As reported by SwimSwam:

Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden re-broke her 55.74 world record that she set earlier in the meet with a time of 55.64 in order to touch in for her third 100m fly world title.

Sjostrom led the race at the first 50 wall with a time of 26.17, but really pushed ahead of the field on the second 50. Splitting a 29.47 on the way home, Sjostrom solidified a golden performance.

Dropping 0.10 off her newly established record, Sjostrom now holds four of the five fastest performances ever in the 100m fly. Her semifinal world record of 55.74 is the second fastest performance ever ahead of American Dana Vollmer’s 55.98 world record from 2012.

In order to win, Sjostrom took down Danish rival Jeanette Ottesen. After the race Ottesen told on-deck reporters that, “she [Sjostrom] was just so fast.”

Ottesen ended up finishing second in 57.05, touching 1.41 seconds behind Sjostrom. With that distance between them, Sjostrom won the race by the largest margin in World Championship history.

This is Sjostrom’s third world title in the 100m fly following her 2009 and 2013 victories. Just like in 2009 and 2013, Sjostrom managed to speed up from prelims to semifinals and from semifinals to finals. In 2009, she had a very similar performance breaking the world record in semifinals and then re-breaking it in the final to win gold in 56.06.

As always Dan and Rowdy doing a great job in the booth. You come to expect and appreciate their voices as they are synonymous with the big events.

Of note is the fact that her 24.43 speed may actually helping her in her second 50 instead of her first. We’ve all talked about how her first 50 technique is compeletely different from the stroke that brought her a 24.43, but that full exersion in finding the wall is something has seems to be paying dividends in how she is finishing second 50.

Phenomenal swim, crazy start by Ottesen which only took Sjostrom 25m to catch up… Crazy.

Then there is Rowdy saying Rowdy things.. Yikes.

The gratitude is welcoming as some will complain about everything from the announcers to the quality of the feed all the while lapping up this stuff for free.

Dat breathing tho. Now that’s how it’s meant to be done.

Sidenote, Ottesen had a phenomenal start. Wow.

A world title in a 100 by 1.5 seconds…as dominant as almost any performance ever in an event of that distance.

What’s especially amazing to me is that after ~65 meters Ottesen was with her. Then she just kept extending the lead continually until it was nearly 2 bodylengths. She opened up that margin in less than a single 50. Incredible, remind of of Secretariat winning the Belmont, continuing to open his lead to 31 lengths at the end.
