For the second time today Scottish swimmer Dan Wallace took down his national record in the 200m IM, this time securing himself a spot in the finals.
Attempting to come from behind on Brazilian Thiago Pereira in the first semifinal, Wallace ended up second in 1:57.77. That time took over half-a-second off his newly established 1:58.28 record that he set in prelims.
Wallace’s prelim splits
- Fly – 25.27
- Back – 30.72
- Breast – 33.41
- Free – 28.88
Wallace’s semifinal splits
- Fly – 25.27
- Back – 30.40
- Breast – 33.35
- Free – 28.75
Wallace equalled his fly split from prelims and was faster on all three remaining legs of his race in order to break the record.
All in all Wallace has taken almost a full second off the Scottish record in just one day and is inching closer and closer to James Goddard’s British record.
If Wallace can take even more time off and go faster than a 1:57.12 in finals, he’ll secure the British record for himself as well.
Going into finals as the fourth seed, Wallace does have plenty of potential to medal. Ryan Lochte of the United States is looking like the favorite to take home gold.
Second seed Wang Shun of China showed that he will be tough to beat as well, demonstrating a very impressive 28.15 last 50 to bring the heat coming home. Pereira, who got the better of him this morning, is seeded third ahead of Wallace.
Well done Dan. About time you hit some headlines, bring it home tomorrow
Lochte will win this by over 1 second.
