USA Swimming Posts First List of Swimmers Confirmed for Jr Worlds Team

USA Swimming has begun posting the list of swimmers confirmed for selection for the team that the United States will send to the Junior World Championships that will be held in Singapore from August 25th-30th.

7 women and 5 men have been assigned to the team through Saturday’s finals. Swimmers on this list of both been nominated for a spot and accepted it, noting that some swimmers will decline a spot for, among other reasons, the overlap with the American school year and in cases of freshmen-to-be the college season.

Cassidy Bayer (Nation’s Capital Swim Club): 100m fly
Lauren Case (Chattahoochee Gold): 100m fly, 800m free relay
Hannah Cox (Upper Valley Aquatic Club): 200m free
Melissa Pish (Waves Bloomington/Normal): 200m free

Grant Shoults (Mission Viejo Nadadores): 200m free

This year, USA Swimming is selecting their Junior World Championships team strictly on the basis of this weekend’s senior National Championship meet.

To be eligible, male team members must have been born in the years 1997, 1998, 1999, or 2000, and female swimmers must have been born in the years 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2001. In more general terms, at year’s end, males must be aged 15-18 and females aged 14-17.

Beyond that, USA Swimming will send swimmers to the meet based on the following criteria:

  • They must have finished in the top 6 in Olympic events, or top 8 in the 100 and 200 freestyle;

and then chosen as:

  • First priority goes to the winner of each Olympic event, and the top four eligible finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyle (given the above criteria); followed by
  • The second-fastest swimmer in every event aside from the 100 and 200 freestyle

With up to 26 spots available on the boys’ team and 26 spots available on the girls’ team, there should be available space for all swimmers who meet the above criteria in either the first or second position.

USA Swimming says that they will continue to update the list as more swimmers both qualify and accept positions on the roster.

I wonder what Michael Andrew will swim at junior worlds. The top two in the 100’s can choose to swim the 50 of that stroke so MA is qualified to swim all 4 50’s 100 br/bk/fl and 200 IM. This meet is a prelim/semi/finals format. That’s a ton of events. I hope he slims his schedule down a little bit because that is too many events.

Looking at the schedule, he would have to swim the 100 back semis, 100 breast semis and the 4x100m free relay on day 1. The 100 back final, 100 breast final, 200 IM Semis and the 100 fly semis on day 2. The 100 fly final, 200 IM final and 50 free semis day 3 (50 back semis as well if he decides to). That’s just the first 3 days….. Mental!

Looks like a lot of kids have declined.

Here’s my list of top 2 US junior times in each event so far after 4 days.
Sorry if I’ve made some errors. Not easy to compare times from prelims and finals and also look for the years of birth to see if they are eligible. I tried my best.

Cassidy Bayer (1999) 59.00 in final
Lauren Case (1998) 59.70 in prelims

MEN’S 400 FREE
Nicholas Sweetser (1997) 3.49.33 in final
Matthew HIrschberger (1998) 3.52.27 in final

WOMEN’S 200 IM
Tatum Wade (1999) 2.14.27 in final
Meghan Small (1998) 2.14.27 in prelims

MEN’S 100 BREAST

Bobo, I think they can’t confirm the 2nd place finishers yet… just 1st placea in the Olympic races. It’s like at OT- we all know the 2nd place finishers will get on the team, but technically they aren’t named till EVERY event winner is named.

Is there somewhere that this list is updated after each session?
