Blueseventy Swim of the Week: Gunes unstoppable at Junior Worlds

Disclaimer: BlueSeventy Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The BlueSeventy Swim is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

No swimmer had a better Junior World Championships meet than Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes.

The female Swimmer of the Meet, Gunes won four individual titles, basically going unchallenged in all four.

Gunes was head and shoulders above the competition winning the 200 IM by 1.3 seconds, the 100 breast by 1 second, the 50 breast by .4 seconds and the 200 breast by a whopping 4.9 seconds.

That final swim was clearly her most impressive effort of the week. Not only did the 17-year-old Gunes break the junior world record, she actually rattled the overall world record, and her 2:19.64 stands up as the fastest time in the world this year by more than a full second.

As we noted during the meet, Gunes’ performances were historic ones for the nation of Turkey – her four golds are the first world-level golds the nation has ever won in the pool.

And for a 17-year-old phenom, there’s no better time to be the world’s most red-hot breaststroker than in the year leading up to the Rio Olympic Games.
