Team Canada set 2 new Canadian deaf swimming records in the final day of the 2015 World Deaf Swimming Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Joshua Baerg set the tone for the day by breaking his own Canadian record in the Men’s 50 metre breaststroke. The youngest swimmer in the finals, Baerg swam a blistering 31.32 – good for 7th in the World.
Team Canada then went on to break a 22 year old Canadian record in the Men’s 4×100 freestyle relay. Thomas Osborn, Brandon Van Wyk, Damiano Panetta and Joshua Baerg swam a time of 3:50.08 and placed 5th in the World.
These new records were a fitting bookend to what was an amazing week for Canadian deaf swimmers. The team had eight top ten finishes and a team personal best time rate of 76%. Team Canada Coach Judy Baker was thrilled with her athletes’ performances. “This young team put their heart and soul into this meet and their effort showed in the results. This level of personal best performance by a team at a single meet is extremely rare”.

In addition to a new Canadian record, Baerg placed 7th in the Men’s 100 metre breaststroke final with a personal best time of 1:10.87. Thomas Osborn had three seventh place finishes in the Men’s 100 metre freestyle (54.73), the Men’s 50 metre backstroke (28.85) and the Men’s 100 metre butterfly (1:00.49).

Coach Baker is looking forward to continuing her work with these young athletes. “As well as these swimmers performed here, I know there is much we can do over the next 2 years as we work toward podium finishes at the 2017 Deaflympics. This is an exciting time for Canadian Deaf Swimming”.
