Rome Puts Their Name In To Host The 2024 Olympic Games

The Associated Press reported that Rome is officially moving forward with a bid for the 2024 olympics.

The Italian Premier Matteo Renzi is very confident in their bid this year, which is a different tune from what we heard in 2012. In 2012, Renzi withdrew their bid for the 2020 Olympics citing financial concerns.

The Rome Committee is confident that Rome’s “incomparable beauty” will help their bid.

“Thus begins a path of construction and sharing for the capital of a plan that will offer athletes and the entire world the chance to experience the Olympic spirit and emotions in a setting of incomparable beauty,” a statement from the Rome committee said.

“No other city in the world can offer an artistic, historical and cultural heritage that stretches over such an ample arc of time, which will allow Olympic competitions to be held in the most spectacular and symbolic places of the Eternal City,” the committee added.

The last major international swimming competition to be hosted in Rome was the 2009 FINA World Championships. That was the last major championship meet that was aided by the rubber full body suits, and as a result, World Records were broken in nearly every event.

The other cities that have submitted bids for the 2024 Olympics include Hamburg, Paris, Los Angeles, and Budapest.

Just to tell exactly..: in 2012 was Mario Monti, premier at that time, who withdrew Rome’s bid for the 2020 Olympics.
Many Italians are sceptical like Luigi is because, unfortunately, in the past (also recent as for 2009 Swimming Wolds or for 1990 Soccer World Cup) there were corruption and waste of money, and a great disorganization in general.
But everything can change ( and something in Italy is changing) and particularly Italian citizens can’t think that forever Italy may not organize a great event. 2015 Expo in Milan is having a good success, after a lot of discussion and troubles.
1960 Rome Olympics were successful. 2024 Rome Olympics could be a pleasant surprise if Cio will… Read more »

Yes, Rome is a gorgeous city.
I continue to think that Paris is still the huge favorite. On paper.
The only chance for Los Angeles is maybe a coalition anti-Paris in a possible second or third round from all other European cities.
2 possibilities:
– TVs from the European countries would prefer of course that the olympic games would be hosted in Europe for good TV schedules in prime time and they push to help Paris’ win.
– but on the other hand, the interest of Rome, Hamburg and Rome would be a win for Los Angeles with 2028 in mind considering the theory of continents alternating every 4 years. And they wouldn’t have Paris… Read more »

I agree that Paris is the overwhelming favourite. People still can’t believe that they lost out to London in 2012, so prevail they shall. If the French have second thoughts, it must be Rome. 2009 worlds was such a good event. Apologies Luigi….we want to come back!
