Georgia Tech Snags NC Freestyler Emily Dykstra for Class of 2020

Georgia Tech has received a verbal from Marlins of Raleigh’s Emily Dykstra for their class of 2020.

Dykstra is a mid-distance freestyler whose utility extends to the shorter butterfly and IM races as well as the distance free events. Look below for her best times over the last couple seasons:

  • 200y free – 1:52.12
  • 500y free – 5:01.10
  • 1650y free – 17:21.19
  • 100y fly – 57.51
  • 200y IM – 2:08.35

A member of the swim team at her high school, Cardinal Gibbons, Dykstra placed 3rd in the 200 free and 4th in the 100 free individually, and also swam the fly leg on Cardinal Gibbons title-winning 200 medley relay and anchored their 2nd place 400 free relay.

Georgia Tech, a team that competes in the ACC, is going to be boosted by Dykstra’s presence on campus. The top four 200 freestylers last season are current seniors that won’t be there once Dykstra gets to campus, and her 1:52.12 puts her third on their top times list from last season. She also would be 4th on the list in the 500 free and 2nd in the mile.

Dykstra’s not quite ready to make waves at the conference level individually, though she’s within a few seconds of the 200 free C final from last year’s champs, and would’ve placed 21st in the mile. She should be an immediate addition to their 800 free relay– last year they finished 11th out of 12 teams at the ACC Champs, and the quartet is graduating after this season.

“I chose Georgia Tech because of the incredible academic opportunities, as well as the chance to join a team that strives to improve as students and athletes day in and day out. As soon as I stepped on campus, I could tell that Georgia Tech had a collaborative environment that worked to prepare its students for the world beyond college. I am so excited to join a spirited team that is also a family committed to helping one another succeed. Go Jackets!”
