Kentucky State Champ Brendan Meyer Verbals To Arizona ‘Cats

The Arizona men have added some versatility to their lineup with a verbal commitment from Brendan Meyer of the high school class of 2016.

Meyer was the Kentucky high school state champ in the 500 free and also finished 3rd in the 100 back last season, and he brings a wide range of potential events to the table for ‘Rocket Rick’ DeMont & co. at Arizona.

Though is 4:26.80 in the 500 free is probably his calling-card at this point, Meyer is also sneaky-good through the butterfly races (1:47.35 in the 200) and very solid in backstroke (1:48.46 in the 200 there).

That’s a good thing for Arizona, which is in full-on rebuilding mode after graduating former NCAA champs Kevin Cordes and Brad Tandy.

Meyer’s Top Times

  • 500 free: 4:26.80
  • 1650 free: 15:28.99
  • 200 free: 1:40.45
  • 100 back: 50.17
  • 200 back: 1:48.46
  • 100 fly: 50.14
  • 200 fly: 1:47.35

Though the NCAA’s event schedule would make it difficult to pair the 1650 free and the 200 fly or back together, a swimmer with Meyer’s endurance might have a shot to make it an option.

Meyer is currently in his senior year with the Northern Kentucky Clippers and Covington Catholic High School. He’s also an accomplished long course swimmer with multiple Speedo Junior National and NCSA Junior National finals under his belt. That should come in handy at Arizona, which has done an excellent job of getting improvements out of its swimmers in both the short course and long course pools.
