The University of Virginia will keep one of the state’s top talents within Virginia’s borders after getting a verbal commitment from top-20 recruit Ted Schubert.
Schubert comes out of NOVA of Virginia and Patrick Henry High School out of Ashland, Virginia. Schubert is one of 4 Virginia-based swimmers on SwimSwam’s list of the top 20 recruits in the class, and he’s the first to choose the University of Virginia, which has struggled to keep top talent home but seems to be improving in that area with this pickup.
A 48-second backstroker and butterflyer, Schubert should be a big addition to the Cavalier lineup.

“I chose UVA because of its academic prestige and because I loved the team and coaches,” Schubert said. “I can really see it as a place I can improve greatly as a student and as an athlete.”
Schubert is a versatile addition to a program trying to find its feet under new head coach Augie Busch. The Cavalier women have thrived in the coaching transition thanks to a number of big-time recruits; getting more pickups like Schubert seems the best strategy for helping the men do the same.
Virginia is competing in the expanded ACC, which has added a slew of teams over the past few years. Schubert will be wrapping up his high school career this year and making his NCAA debut next fall.
