Defending CIF 100 Fly Champ Maddie Murphy Goes Golden, Verbals to Cal

The Cal Golden Bears have picked up a top-notch in-state commitment in Crow Canyon Country Club’s Maddie Murphy. Murphy, who swims with Carondelet High School in the San Francisco area, won the 100 fly at the first-ever CIF State Championships.

Murphy’s Top Times

  • 50 free – 23.13/26.51
  • 100 free – 50.02/56.73
  • 200 free – 1:48.84/2:04.36
  • 100 fly – 53.01/1:00.71
  • 200 fly – 2:02.37/2:19.00

Murphy is very proficient in the shorter freestyle events, which will make her a viable relay option for any of Cal’s free relays. What they’ll really be looking for her to contribute in, though, is the 100 fly. She’s under the Olympic Trials cut in the meters 100 fly, and her yards time would’ve put her 6th on their top times list from last season, as would her 200 fly time.

Cal has had a few monster recruiting classes of late, and their roster’s only glaring hole is in the breaststroke. They had three butterfliers under 52 seconds in the 100 last year, led by the 50.94 put down by NCAA A finalist Farida Osman. Murphy is set to join a program with one of the thickest talent pools in the world, and her 100 fly time is almost a second and a half under the 2015-16 NCAA ‘B’ standard. Cal put up half of the A finalists in the 100 fly at Pac-12s last season, and Murphy’s best time would’ve just gotten her into the A final, too. She would’ve also made C finals in the 50, 100, and 200 free as well as the 200 fly.

Murphy has what it takes to score at the conference level as a freshman, and her 100 fly makes her an even more valuable asset to the Bears in the future.

I chose CAL because the second I walked on campus it felt like home. Teri and the rest of the coaching staff are incredible and I cannot wait to be a part of the CAL family. The girls on the team were so welcoming and the team atmosphere was amazing. It’s a perfect balance between athletics and academics and I’m so honored to say I’m a golden bear!!

Murphy is Cal’s first big-time butterfly commit to their class of 2020. She joins Anina Lund, Alexa BuckleyAislinn LightChenoa Devine, and Keaton Blovad.
