Swim Teams help Light The Night for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy men’s and women’s swimming and diving team spent its Saturday evening volunteering for the annual Light The Night event held by the Indianapolis Chaptor of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Greyhounds helped direct walkers at the event, and cheered them on. Coach Jason Hite and his family participated in the walk, which raised more than $600,000 and featured more than 2,500 walkers.

“We have really enjoyed welcoming Jason into the UIndy swim and dive family this year, and there’s nothing that makes us happier than supporting him and his family at an event like Light the Night,” Torie Pena said. “Not only were we able to support our coach and his son, but it was a great team bonding experience that really allowed us to get closer off the pool deck. Volunteering teaches us how important it is to give back, and we are proud to represent UIndy Athletics when we do it.”

The annual event starts at Victory Field and then takes a route down the Indianapolis Downtown Canal and back. The Light The Night Walk is a fundraising campaign benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and their funding of research to find blood cancer cures. Coming together for a common goal, friends, families and co-workers form fundraising walk teams. Millions of consumers also help by donating at retail outlets. Culminating in inspirational and memorable evening walks every fall, participants in nearly 200 communities across North America join together carrying illuminated lanterns to take steps to end cancer. Nationally, Light The Night participants raise an average of $250 per walker.
