So we all know that North Carolina State is doing something right, as the men’s squad finished in the top 8 at last year’s NCAA Men’s Championships for the first time since 1976. But, Assistant Coach Bobby Guntoro gives us an inside look at today’s practice, complete with a video of an all-out 100 freestyle done by its squad’s tremendous trio of senior Simonas Bilis, sophomore Ryan Held and junior transfer Joe Bonk.

After 45 minutes of intense dryland, Guntoro tells SwimSwam that the team undertook a main set involving 1000 max out kick combined with 800 max out swims (100s with resistance).  Then, the tricky coaching staff added a 100 free all out off the block, without swimmers knowing about it ahead of time. An NC State “Empty the Tank” special, as Guntoro calls it.

You can hear Guntoro shouting out splits above the thunderous splashing, but just how did the three men fare? Times were as follows:

Bilis – 44.0
Bonk – 44.3
Held – 45.4

At last year’s NCAAs, Bilis re-set his own school and ACC conference record by scoring a 41.78 in the 100 free for runner-up in the event, while Held registered a mark of 42.75 to earn 16th.  With Bonk now pushing the clock along with them in practice, the Wolfpack’s ACC reign is in good hands.

43 low for Bilis next week against FSU? Maybe even a 42? Bonk not much farther back.
