Iowa Tops Michigan State in Big Ten Duel

Iowa took down its Big Ten foe, Michigan State, in a dual meet on Friday night. The men earned a 188-91 victory, while the women finished 165-132 over Michigan State and 204.5-92 over Northern Iowa. The Michigan State women earned their first victory of the season over Northern Iowa.

Men-

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team posted a Big Ten Conference dual victory, downing Michigan State, 188-91, on Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. The Hawkeyes won 12 events on the night.

“It went well, there was great racing again today, but we are eager to get better,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “Tomorrow we will wake up and have weights, and work to get better as we head into even more of our Big Ten schedule coming up.”

Iowa opened the meet with a victory in the 200-medley relay with the quartet of junior Jackson Halsmer, and seniors David Ernstsson, Roman Trussov andJackson Allen touching in 1:30.77.

Freshman Jack Smith swam to a Hawkeye win in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:41.82. Smith also tallied a first place finish in the 100 free with a time of 45.74. Smith was followed by Halsmer (46.24), Ernstsson (46.32), and fellow freshmanMatt Kamin (46.38).

Trussov posted his first individual win in the 100-breast, finishing in a time of 56.30. He also took the top spot in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.59.

Sophomore Jerzy Twarowski won the 200-fly, posting a time of 1:51.25. He was followed by freshman Sam Sauerbrei, who swam a time of 1:53.24.

Iowa took the top four finishes in the 50 free. Allen had a first place finish with the time of 20.32, followed by Halsmer (20.74), senior Charles Holliday (21.14), and junior Brandon Farnum, who finished with a time of 21.19.

Andrew Parker backstroked into first after posting a 1:51.25 time in the 200-back. He also swam to a runner-up finish in the 100 back in 51.07.

Chris Dawson tallied a pair of top-two finishes in the distance freestyle events. He won the 500 free in 4:38.72, while posting a runner-up finish in the 1,000 free in 9:36.75.

Iowa also got a victory in the diving well, courtesy of junior Andrew Hull. The Indiana transfer dove to a first-place finish on the 3-meter springboard, finishing with a score of 331.55.

The Hawkeyes had the top three finishers in the event with junior Brandis Heffner finishing as the runner-up with a 317.60 and senior Addison Boschult placing third with a 314.70.

“The divers did a nice job,” said diving coach Todd Waikel. “Although I was disappointed with the women on the 1-meter, they rebounded nicely on the 3-meter. We will continue to work hard as we move into the bulk of our season.”

Iowa returns to action Oct. 30, hosting Minnesota at 5 p.m. (CT).

“Well we still have a long season ahead of us,” said Long. “We are still putting the pieces together, so it will be a little while until we know where we will stand. It will be a battle all the way up until the Big Tens in January, which is a good thing.”

Women-

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team posted a pair of dual victories on Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium, downing Big Ten foe Michigan State, 165-132, and Northern Iowa, 204.5-92. The Hawkeyes won 12 events.

Kabacinski also brought Iowa a first place finish in the 200-free, posting a time of 1:51.69. Sophomore Nikol Lagodzinska followed with a second place showing with a time of 1:53.64. McNamara also won the 100-fly, posting a time of 56.24.

Freshman Abbey Schneider won a pair of distance events — winning the 1,000 and 500 free. She finished with a time of 10:17.48 in the 1,000 and 5:01.71 in the 500.

Sophomore Shea Hoyt claimed a Hawkeye win in the 100 breast, posting a time of 1:05.95. She was trailed closely by freshman Katie Wells, who finished in 1:06.19.

Sophomore Tereysa Lehnertz flew into first in the 200 fly, finishing in 2:03.14. Sougstad followed her lead, taking the individual title in the 50 free (23.34). Sougstad also took the individual title in the 200 IM in 2:06.66.

Kabacinski sprinted her way to a first place finish in the 100 free in 50.89, while sophomore Meghan Lavell was victorious in the 200 back, reaching for the wall in 2:04.11.

Sophomore Morgan Rafferty paced the Hawkeyes in the diving well, finishing as the runner-up in the 3-meter (249.00) and placing fourth on the 1-meter (231.65).

Michigan State:

Results

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Michigan State swimming & diving program fell on the road to Iowa in both the men and women’s competitions. The women, swimming against both the Hawkeyes and Northern Iowa, notched their first win of the year, beating the Panthers on Friday at Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

“I thought our kids had a good, competitive meet,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “This was a good place for us to start our short course season, and it was nice to get a win on the women’s side.”

The meet against the Hawkeyes started on Thursday night, as Iowa jumped out to an early lead through four events on both the men and women’s sides.

The 800-yard free relay scored crucial points for both the men and women. The Spartans took second in both races, with the men clocking a 6:55.55 and the women combining for a 7:44.04.

Junior Courtney Kennedy tallied points for MSU in the 100-yard IM, swimming a 59.66. Sophomore Beatrix Panitz also scored in the event, tapping the wall in 1:00.99.

Junior Alex Kandt and senior Nate Weeks finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men’s edition of the 100 IM, turning in performances of 52.61 and 53.44.

Thursday’s competition was capped by the men’s 1-meter dive competition, in which junior Brennan LaBar and senior Charlie Maurer finished in fifth and sixth, respectively, with scores of 277.95 and 254.48.

On Friday, the Spartans edged out victories in several individual events. Sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz was the first to tally a victory, tapping the wall in 9:32.60, more than four seconds earlier than the next finisher, in the men’s 1,000 free.

MSU found success in both the men and women’s 100-yard back, as sophomores Alex Trompke and Madison Nowak notched wins, finishing their respective races in 50.75 and 56.07

The 200-yard breaststroke was another bright spot for the Spartans with two more victories. Kandt paced the field with a 2:08.71, while senior Marina Borri’s 2:21.88 held up as the quickest time on the women’s side.

MSU’s diving corps impressed in its season debut. Freshmen Julia Oppedisano and Morgan Wellenzohn opened their careers in the Green and White with a first and second-place finish in the 1-meter dive, respectively. Oppedisano earned a score of 267.50, as Wellenzohn’s performance garnered a tally of 239.50.

Junior Madelin Sewell completed the Spartans’ sweep on the boards in the women’s competition, claiming the 3-meter dive with a mark of 287.60.

Senior Elizabeth Brown built off the season opener against Michigan and Purdue with another second-place finish in the 200 IM, clocking a 2:09.09. On the men’s side, sophomore Connor Lamb took second with a time of 1:55.55 and was followed by four more Spartans. Weeks tapped the wall in 1:56.03, before Kandt finished in 1:56.60. Sophomore Tal Hanani rounded out the top five with a 1:59.22 and sophomore Mitch Strahlman turned in a 2:01.24.

At the conclusion of the two-day contest, the men fell to Iowa, 188-91, as the women were bested by the Hawkeyes, 165-132.

“We will build on this meet and work hard over the next couple of weeks to see what kind of improvements we can make,” Gianiodis said.

The MSU women’s swimming & diving team returns on Oct. 23 against Illinois at the Charles McCaffree Pool. The men will be idle until traveling to Notre Dame on Oct. 30.

Northern Iowa:

Results

Iowa City, Iowa—The University of Northern Iowa dived into their season this afternoon competing against the University of Iowa and Michigan State University at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on the University of Iowa’s campus.

UNI would fall to the Hawkeye’s and the Spartans but were highlighted by outstanding performances from Rachel Siebenaller, Molly Lembezeder, Veronica Herrmann, and Taylor Ostrowski, with a top-3 finish on the 1-meter dive from Sarah Kemp.

Sophomore Rachel Siebenaller continued to make her splash in the pool. Siebenaller took home a fourth place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:54.33. Siebenaller was just over ten seconds shy of her record in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:06.63 and a second place finish. The team of Siebenaller, freshman Crystal Florman, junior Aftin Phyfe and fellow sophomore Molly Lembezeder swam into third place in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team was six seconds short of taking the top spot on the school record board and just milliseconds from getting into the top-5, with a combined time of 3:32.96.

Molly Lembezeder was unrelenting in her efforts this afternoon, snagging a second-place finish in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 51.61 seconds and a third place spot in the 50-yard Freestyle, with a time of 23.82 seconds. Lembezeder was within milliseconds of shattering both records.

Junior Veronica Herrmann was also knocking on the door of her records. Herrmann was three seconds short of meeting her current record in the 100 Breaststroke, with a time of 1:06.81. She was within 6 seconds of her record in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:25.69.

Senior Taylor Ostrowski swam into third place in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:09.87, just five seconds short of her record in that event.

Senior Sarah Kemp dived into third place in the 1-meter diving, with a dive score of 231.85. Kemp also placed sixth in the 3-meter dive, with a dive score of 220.90.

“Today was an excellent start for our season,” said head coach, Doug Humphrey. “Our relays are faster and we were much more competitive with Iowa & Michigan State of the Big 10. This meet will prepare us for battle next week against South Dakota and South Dakota State.”

The Panther team heads to South Dakota on Oct. 22 for a competition at 5 p.m. and then travel to South Dakota State on Oct. 23 to compete at 4 p.m. The first home meet for the Northern Iowa squad is Oct. 30, playing host to Nebraska at 4 p.m.
