Lamb Aiming For John Servati’s 200fr Record At MS State Championships

The North/South meets finished up in Mississippi over the weekend and the psych sheet for the 2015 MS State Championships are now available. The state meet is scheduled to take place on Halloween at the Tupelo Aquatic center.

The Mississippi State Championship meet is divided into two classes. Class one, which is comprised of 1a-4a schools, will compete on one end of the pool while class two (5a & 6a schools) will compete at the other end. Each school can enter up to four swimmers per event and one relay team for each really event.

Stetson Lamb will be competing in his final high school championship meet. He recently committed to swim for Auburn next year. Lamb will have a lot of eyes on him at the State Championships as he is seeded ahead of the state records in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Although his in-season times are already of the records, he will be chasing the meet record of a hero within the swimming community.

The 200 freestyle state record is currently held by the late John Servati. Servati swam for Alabama in college after a great high school career in Mississippi. While he was at Alabama, his life was tragically cut short. He died holding up a retention wall after it gave out during a storm to allow friends to get out from under the wall safely. Servati’s record currently stands at 1:41.95 and was set back in 2010.

Lamb’s best time in the 200 freestyle this year is already 1:41.02, which is still more than a second off of his lifetime best of 1:39.82. In the breaststroke, Lamb has already been 58.05 this year, which is just faster than Matthew Nichol‘s state record of 58.12 from 2010.

Last year, Lamb set the state record in the 100 freestyle, but he won’t be able to defend that this year. Lamb’s record time from last year of 46.82 has already been surpassed this year by Blaise Vera. Vera is the top seed in the men’s 100 free with a 46.12 and the 50 freestyle with a 21.26.

This meet seems quite slow considering most of the A qualifying times for Georgia Hs State meet 1-5A and 6A could beat most of these records
