Penn State Nittany Lions Grab Trio of Commits: Zurmuhl, Fried & Freund

For more commitment articles, be sure to check out SwimSwam’s College Recruiting channel.

The Penn State Nittany Lions have loaded up their recruiting class with three solid recruits, two women and one man. That list includes Pennsylvania’s Hannah Zurmuhl, New Yorker Carly Fried and Canada’s Kaelan Freund.

Zurmuhl joins Penn State from in-state powerhouse club Central Bucks. She’s a huge pickup for the Nittany Lions in a number of events, from sprint freestyle to backstroke to butterfly.

Zurmuhl’s Top Times

  • 50 yard free: 22.94
  • 100 yard free: 50.72
  • 200 yard free: 1:51.62
  • 100 yard back: 56.01
  • 100 yard fly: 55.68

Zurmuhl also attends Pennridge High School. She looks like the type of versatile sprinter that has become so valuable in the NCAA’s sprint-heavy format. She’s perhaps even more impressive in long course, where she’s been 25.95 in the 50 free.

In short course, she was the Pennsylvania AAA state runner-up in the 50 free last season.

Fried, meanwhile, is a breaststroke specialist out of the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics team in New York.

Fried’s Top Times

  • 100 yard breast: 1:04.28
  • 200 yard breast: 2:22.07

Fried was second in the 100 breast at the inaugural Futures Championship in Greensboro, and should have potential to develop into a breaststroke mainstay for Penn State.

Her counterpart on the men’s side is Freund, another breaststroker who will beef up the men’s side of the roster.

Freund’s Top Times

  • 100 meter breast: 1:04.36
  • 200 meter breast: 2:21.61

Freund comes out of Lethbridge Amateur Swim Club in Alberta, Canada, and has some solid long course breaststroke times. Roughly converted, those times are something like 56.1 and 2:03.97 in short course yards (per our time converter here).

Hey Kaelan! No matter what got you there, your family is very proud of your achievements! Keep working hard as you always have and best of luck at PSU. They are lucky to have you!

The new tracking system breaks it down by age group. Relax. The kid has swam with the Jr. National squad, holds a few Provincial Records and won several National Age Group titles…. he is still a great catch.

A little understated on Freund. He finished his year with Canadian records for both 100 and 200 Breast in SCM for 16 year olds (at 1:01 and 1:13 respectively). Going to be a great find for Penn State!

There are no Canadian records for 16 year olds, only for 15-17.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
