STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both open their regular season against Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 24 at noon in the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on the Storrs campus.
The women’s team got a head start last weekend when it hosted Rhode Island, Yale and Central Connecticut in a non-scoring quad scrimmage. The Huskies saw impressive swims from several swimmers to earn four first-place finishes, including freshman Jackie Van Lew (Tinton Falls, N.J.), who won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.39 and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.79).
The UConn men’s swimming team is looking to build off last year’s success in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies had nine swimmers earn All-Conference honors after finishing third at the conference championship. Connecticut set three school records at the meet, including senior captain Jeff Magin (Brookfield, Conn.), who recorded a program-best time of 48.59 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke.
The men’s and women’s diving teams were undefeated in dual meets last season, with divers breaking the women’s pool and school records at 3-meters. Seven divers competed at the conference championship, all making the finals in at least one event. The Huskies sent five divers to the NCAA Zone Championship and senior captain Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) made her way to the NCAA National Championships.
Saturday’s meet will be the third consecutive year the Huskies have faced Villanova and the second-straight year they have opened the regular season against the Wildcats. UConn bested Villanova, 134.5-127.5, to kick off last season.
