Ohio Women Fall Narrowly to Bowling Green

In their first meet of the season, the Bowling Green women topped Ohio University in a close decision. The final score was 157.50-142.50. Bowling Green’s Victoria Griffin, Daniela Carrillo and Franziska Wohlert each picked up double first place finishes in the team win.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Ohio women’s swimming and diving team continued action this weekend, taking on Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green on Saturday (Oct. 24), falling to the Falcons in a hard fought battle, 157.50-142.50.

In the first event of the morning, the 200-yard Medley Relay, the Bobcats ‘A’ team finished in second place, finishing the race in 1:47.07.

In the 1,000 Freestyle, Ohio took the top three spots. Junior Bianca Hauzer (Bedfordview, South Africa) finished in first place (10:30.48), freshman Ana Henderson(Danville, Calif.) finished in second place (10:31.94) and senior Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio) finished third, touching in with a final time of 10:44.41

In the third event, the 200-yard Freestyle, junior Josie Barker (Richmond, N.Yorkshire, Eng.) finished second with a time of 1:54.79 and freshman Kimberly Zehnderfinished fourth (1:56.91).

In the 200-yard Butterfly sophomore Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.) finished in second place with a time of 2:07.46 and teammate junior Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) finished in third place, touching in with a final of 2:07.64.

For the second-straight meet, freshman Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) won the 50-yard Freestyle in 23.63. Senior Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio) placed fourth with a final time of 24.43.

Van Lanen would finish in second place in the 10-yard Freestyle, finishing with a final time 51.71. Barker would finish in third place (53.50) and senior Haley Clark(College Station, Texas) would finish fourth with a final of 53.64.

In the 19th even of the afternoon, Dawson placed second in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in at 2:03.68. In the next event, the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.) finished in second place, finishing with a time of 2:26.04.

In the 500-yard Freestyle, the Bobcats swept the podium again with Henderson finishing in first place (5:07.53), Hauzer in second (5:11.05) and Barker in third, finishing with a time of 5:11.76.

In the 100-yard Butterfly, Junior Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) finished in first place with a final time of 57.21 and Van Lanen placed second, touching in at 57.29.

In event 15 of the afternoon, Dawson finished in second place in the 200-yard IM, finishing with a final time of 2:08.94. Gyurke finished in third place, finishing the race in 2:09.78.

In the final event of the afternoon, the Bobcats ‘A’ team won the 400-yard Freestyle relay in 3:31.04.

In the diving portion of the event, senior Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) won the 3-meter event, finishing with a final score of 272.10 and sophomore Karrisa Conner (Granite Bay, Calif.) placed fourth (207.22). In the 1-meter event, the Bobcats placed first in second, with Bartlett winning the event (278.77) and Conner finishing in second place with a total score of 214.05.

The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 when Ohio opens the home portion of their schedule when they take on MAC foe Akron. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. inside the Ohio University Aquatics Center.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming & diving program started theMatt Ense era off with a victory, defeating Ohio University 157.5-142.5 on Saturday at Cooper Pool. The victory came in the Falcons’ first dual meet of the season.

“Today was a great team effort throughout the meet,” Ense said. “The team started the meet off strong and we finished the day strong as a group. We showed tremendous heart at the end of races to get our hands to the wall first.”

In the meet, the Falcons got off to a strong start, winning five of the first six events on the day. In total, the Falcons were victorious in nine of the 16 events in the meet, taking top place in all but five swimming events.

Individually, Victoria Griffin, Daniela Carrillo and Franziska Wohlert each won two events. Both of the Falcons relay teams also finished first in the meet. Griffin, a two-time All-MAC first team performer, won both the 200 and 100 free events. Daniela Carrillo, a senior from Hermosillo, Mexico, won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke races, while Germany native Franziska Wohlert was victorious in the 200 back and 200 IM events. BGSU’s strong start in the meet was aided by wins from Maya Skorupski (100 back) and Jordan Bullock (200 fly) as well.

Several freshmen made their first career appearance for the Orange and Brown in a dual meet. Emily Verbrugge (1,000 free, 100 breast, 200 breast), Megan Larson (200 free, 50 free, 100 free), Anna Paccapaniccia (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM), Christin Swanapoel Stevens (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM), Kalinka Mogensen (50 free, 100 fly), Claire Stam (diving), Ashley White (diving), Abby Villenauve(diving), and Mary Edwards (200 back, 100 fly).

Bowling Green will return to the pool next weekend for a dual meet at University of Toledo. The Battle of I75 will begin on Friday (Oct. 30) at 5:00 p.m. Last season, the Falcons defeated the Rockets 185-115 in a tri-meet also involving Marshall. BGSU and UT also swam against each other earlier this season at the Tom Stubbs Relays.
