In the 2nd National High School Record to go down on the day (with more yet likely to come), 16-year old phenom Missy Franklin took down the National Independent High School Record in the girls 200 free at the Colorado State Championships.
The Regis Jesuit Junior cruised through the preliminary heats of the 200 free with a time of 1:43.98. She took the race out in an amazing 50.52, and finished in a 53.46. This swim took down a 9-month old National Independent High School Record that was set by Chelsea Chenault at 1:45.12 back in May in California.
The overall record is a second faster, with Dagny Knutson’s 1:42.81 the next target in this race.
This also took 4 seconds off of the Colorado state record that was previously held by Franklin’s old training partner, and current Georgia freshman Jordan Mattern.
Franklin later would take the top seed in the 100 backin 52.91. That swim was six tenths off of her Independent School Record of 52.30 from last year.
In her final swim of the meet, she swam a 48.45 in the 100 free leading off Regis Jesuits’ 400 free relay. That’s about two-tenths from her Independent School mark, and three-tenths from Dagny Knutson’s overall record.
Finals will be aired live on ESPN3.com on Saturday at 2PM Mountain Time.
I know she’s a much better long course swimmer but If Missy was fully tapered and was at the sea level, she would be able to swim today easily in yards a little 1.41. But I don’t think she’s at her best now. Her main goal is for the summer. And there’s the altitude. I hope I’ll be surprised.

If you use the Colorado Timing System altitude conversion calculator and assume the pool was at 5,000 feet the conversion yields a 1:42.78……to answer your question. A great swim by any measure and she is certainly capable of faster…I wish her luck in doing it today.
Sorry, forgot this. Bobo, ever swim the 200FR? Regardless of how she may not push it on the end, it’s a hard race.
She lives at altitude and why wouldn’t she swim faster in finals? She looked tired, we’re you there?
Congrats to Missy. I don’t know if she will swim much faster in finals because she looked very tired after her 200 free. And don’t forgive it’s a meet at 5000 feet above sea level. She would swim this race faster at the sea level. I don’t know if she’s tapered but it’s always fun to watch this young girl in the water.
