Minnesota Set for Road Meet Against Iowa

MINNESOTA BACK ON ROAD
After a week off from competition, the Golden Gophers will travel to Iowa City on Friday, Oct. 30 for a 5:00 p.m. B1G match-up against the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

GOPHERS VS. HAWKEYES
Men’s duals between the two conference teams date back to 1920. Since that first match-up, the Gophers have held a winning record of 49-40. Last season’s “W” of 163-137 was highlighted by a diving sweep from Manny Pollard, and first-place finishes from Paul Fair, Jakub Maly, Daryl Turner and Gopher grad CJ Smith.

The women’s programs first met in 1977, with the Gophers undefeated vs. the Hawkeyes the past ten seasons. The overall match-up record stands at 26-6-1, advantage Minnesota. Last year, Minnesota tallied 195 points to Iowa’s 105 and returners Lauren Votava and Brooke Zeiger each had two individual event wins.

LAST TIME OUT
Both the men and women of Minnesota swimming and diving are coming off a close loss against the Wisconsin Badgers. In Madison, the Gophers’ diving team continued to shine, breaking three University of Wisconsin Natatorium pool records during the meet. Golden Gophers Matt Barnard, Conner McHugh, Danielle Nack and Yu Zhou each had two individual wins in their respective events.

IN THE RANKS
The Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team holds the No. 17 spot in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) first ranking of the season. Men’s swimming and diving rankings are set to come out next week.

ON THE DOCKET
The Gophers will make a trip to Grand Forks, North Dakota next Saturday, Nov. 7 for some non-conference competition against the University of North Dakota. Following the meet against UND, the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center will play host to the Arena Pro Swim Series at Minneapolis from Thursday, Nov. 12 through Saturday, Nov. 14. The three-day, long course meters meet will offer the Gophers more chances to pick up Olympic Trials cuts, as well as a good check-point on the season.
