The Purdue Boilermaker men hosted the men of Miami (OH) in what would turn out to be a primarily one-sided fight. Purdue’s depth across all stroke disciplines proved too much for the RedHawks to handle in West Lafayette tonight, as the final score saw Purdue notch the win 178-117.
The foursome of Ted Curtiss (24.32), Bo Ilgenfritz (28.14), Filip Bujoczek (22.26) and Adam Johnston (19.92) combined to register the first win on the night in the 200 medley relay. Their teammates in the “D” version of the relay finished just .17 of a second behind, as Gavin McCulloch (25.05), Christian Bals (26.11), Erik Juliusson (23.07) and Eddy Zawatski (20.58) registered a runner-up time of 1:34.81 to give the Boilermakers the meet lead right off the bat.
Purdue would continue its point attack, racking up a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle led by freshman Jackson Higgins who touched in 9:38.71, with teammate, sophomore Adam Noens touching the wall in 9:46.62. Another point siege occurred in the 200 butterfly race, where the Boilermakers threw down a sweep of the top three finishes. Joshua Brooks led the charge in 1:55.30, followed by Alex Close in 1:57.29 and Wesley McGovern in 1:58.44 to collect another 16 points.
The 100 freestyle was also victim to a 1-3 Boilermaker finish, as senior Adam Johnston rocked a 20.62, followed by Stephen Seliskar and Nate Thomas who touched in 2nd and 3rd, registering times of 20.99 and 21.32, respectively. Such was the story in the 200 backstroke event as well, where sophomore and Lafayette native Jake Thomas topped the field in 1:51.77, but saw teammate Timothy Barth close hard and touch just .12 behind in 1:51.89. Gavin McCulloch collected 3rd place in 1:54.88.
Highlights for Miami RedHawks include a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle by Lucas Brock (1:42.49) and Chris Dieter (1:42.95), as well as Evan Bader’s victory in the 100 breaststroke (57.81).
